I suppose it depends who you're giving it to. I wouldn't give my parents or grandmother money, but I'm giving my niece some foreign currency because she's going on a skiing trip in January. And frankly, money is always a good fall-back for teenagers, I never know what to get them and when I was their age money was the greatest gift of all.

they prefer money anyway - and what they get is there choice. much better.

It’s totally fine to give money out as a present, some people don’t really give you much information about what they want or they already got it. You could easily give it before christmas so they can buy something and get someone else to wrap it up.

Anyone I get money for I always get a little something to go with it. Money is good and I don't mind giving it to the younger members of the family at all, but it's always nice for them to have something to open, too.

Yes I think so, the person getting the money can then buy what they want, I mean this year both my parents gave me money and I went and bought what I needed or wanted and gave them the stuff I bought. It better because they dont have to be worried what they get will be something I dont want. I know what I am getting, but I dont care, I am getting stuff I need/Want. I do the same to family members/friends, I either give them money to buy what they want or ask them what the want and I buy it. I dont really want to buy something that they dont want.

I would NEVER give money at Christmas, its a "Here I couldn't be bothered" gift and an insult to who you give it to IMO

We have a budget for our boys..give them two thirds of the cash which they buy what they want and I wrap it up...the other third I buy them a couple of surprise gifts.
Otherwise you end up having to spend the New Year taking things back and giving them the cash anyway...

that is what my mum does, we have a budget and half of its cash so i can buy games because she has no idea what i like or clothes and the other half is presents she buys. If i don’t spend all of it, i get the rest in a card that goes in my savings.

I think it's acceptable, but I do understand where some people will say it feels less personal. The husband and I give money to his siblings but we're not that close to them (and we don't really know what they like/enjoy).

I try to avoid monetary gifts as much as possible. Just because, if you give them money, it's not really a surprise what they will buy. They will just buy the normal things they normally would (unless the gift card itself is outside the box)... much better to have someone choose for you since it wouldn't have been something you will probably buy in a few paychecks on your own. A lot more memorable.

I think a good compromise is if you're giving for a couple (or someone who is dating), you can gift a giftcard set for a dinner and a movie, etc. It's not as good as giving them something physical, but maybe it will lead to something physical...

For me personally, if it's not a PSN or Steam gift card I don't want your ****ing "gift" :hmph:

No.

Barry. 23-12-2017 09:05 PM

Sorry no as in not rude, I give money sometimes.

Marsh. 23-12-2017 09:06 PM

Yeah, if I'm struggling to think of something I'll opt for a gift card if I know they like clothes, amazon, music, games etc. Just 20 quid in a card is a little naff.

Whenever I've got it, it's gone in my wallet and it's what I've used when buying my dinner at work or something.

At least that way they get themselves something fun that you paid for.
Not just saved you ten minutes to draw cash out for a bacon bun.
