Crimson Dynamo 02-08-2019 05:53 PM

the Martyrs of Otranto, were 813 inhabitants of the Salentine city of Otranto in southern Italy who were killed on 14 August 1480. The mass execution is often explained as taking place after the Otrantins refused to convert to Islam when the city fell to an Ottoman force under Gedik Ahmed Pasha.

There’s a big difference between guessing who’ll die and openly using those people who were slaughtered for their religion to mock people you don’t like politically.

He’d be after blood if someone mocked him or anybody else with a picture of Auschwitz victims and we all know it

Northern Monkey 02-08-2019 06:03 PM

Are we really getting all butthurt about some people who died in the fourteen hundreds?
Honestly,If it wasn’t against Labour no one would give a ****.

Sugar can compare corbyn to satan for all I care, just dont involve the remains of innocent people

And how telling that although you're religious you still can't bring yourself to condemning the use of relics sacred to a religion only bc it doesn't suit your politics

Alf 02-08-2019 08:12 PM

Jesus wept! I just got infracted for singing "Dem bones"

Only commenting on your posts, on a public forum. Nothing more or nothing less. :)
Don't post if you don't want replies
Otherwise don't tell me to be quiet. I'm not here to be liked by you, but to have a debate.

How is this relevant here....there are lots of silly threads in chat and games, how does that mean that nobody in this thread can find that tweet distasteful?

smudgie 02-08-2019 09:22 PM

If the bones and skulls are so openly on show, I can’t see why a comment or joke about them is so taboo.
If they deserve respect then give them it and bury them in peace.

These people were declared saints and it is a tradition, where possible or appropriate, to display relics of saints.
Sugar should know better, basically.

Kizzy 02-08-2019 09:36 PM

Well.. I'm not religious but it seems to me it's ok to Diss religion and religious history as long as it's not your religion being dissed?

Just pointing outcome double standards on here at times

DouglasS 02-08-2019 09:37 PM

Not going to lie I bet a lot of people who visit that Museum have made a pass away joke/comment to a friend, whether it be tasteless or not. I think people are too easily offended now.

Explain how that is relevant to me or this thread?

Why are some people so intent on siding with their friends they're literally grasping at straws?

They're not supposed "Lord" broadcasting it to the public.

Nor have you provided an example that can be discussed as it's a non existent hypothetical.

there is no law against making a joke against a religious relic, certainly in the civilised world. Sugar made a joke .... A JOKE ... that's all

Are you gonna comment on the topic or keep making comments on members based on hypotheticals that exist nowhere but in your head?

I could just as easily have said you'd be saying the opposite if Corbyn mocked Sugar with a picture of Jewish skeletons at Auschwitz.

Not really, there are lots of different members, it doesn't naturally follow that the people in this debate then go into chat and games to chat about dead people so where's the double standard?

I thought it quite simple Marsh, some are up in arms about disrespecting the dead but are quite happy to make a game of it when it suits, I am not siding with friends it's my opinion, the tweet was wrong , it's just a bit much when people come over holier than thou when they play games about death.

Who makes the game?

You need to be specific?

Because throwing everyone into one basket doesn't work. I've never taken part in that game in my life so drop the ridiculous tangent and stick to the story provided in the OP, eh?

Well discussing members is against the rules isn't it Kaz?

You're normally cheerleading Chuff on that front so let's not get into double standards, eh?

reece(: 02-08-2019 10:00 PM

Turning every thread to about the members is getting more tiring by the day, can you not have debate without making it personal?

Very unfair comment as Chuff is not on here much and we don't always agree, isn't she a member that you are discussing aswell, no need to bring her into everything , I agree with some people ,others I do not, that's not cheerleading, it's the way we all are .

I mean it’s not a non existent hypothetical - some people have a dark humour, I bet countless people have made a joke similar - doesn’t mean they’re bad people or should be crucified online. It might be a non existent hypothetical if you are sheltered and haven’t met lots of different people in the real world

I don’t agree with what he said and it is a bit tasteless, but I find it a little embarrassing for people to have such an OTT reaction to something that was a tasteless joke

...George Galloway wants the Pope to intervene...?..I’m not sure what type of intervention is hoped for...Kazanne mentioned the Death Thread, which isn’t relevant at all...and yet it is in that it shows how frivolous/flippancy etc can walk side by side with respect...sometimes something ‘inappropriate or unwise’ might pop into our head and off our tongue and I think that would probably apply to all of us...and if when it happened..if we were celebrity and if we tweeted it....ooops, how very awful...I feel that all of his insult was directed at the shadow cabinet and not the long dead Christian martyrs...

Kizzy 03-08-2019 05:59 AM

Divine intervention obv.... he needs a good old smiting :)

Go back and see my first post in here , I never jumped on YOU at all , if anything it was the other way round, stop thinking everything is about you, you responded by being rude , so I answered you in a likewise manner. Now lets just get back on topic shall we ? Ican see why Sugar doesn't like Corbyn, but he should have chosen a better way to express it, but some people do over react.

2s wasn't the only one to take exception to your comment, several people did 2s was just the first.
How do you express your dislike for someone for by insulting the people around them?...

bots 03-08-2019 07:58 AM

Ever since time began, jokes have been made about tragic events ... it's human nature, and I am so disappointed that the world has gotten so frightened of saying the wrong thing that it's lost all its humour

A kids joke that was going round at the time of a particularly tragic event .... Why should you not wear loose fitting underwear .... cause cher nob l fallout

Another ... where did the shuttle crew go on holiday ... i wont state that one here

The point is, humour has always been associated with death and tragedy, tasteless maybe, but still humour ... and it's really grim that people try and stop it now because it doesn't fit with their particular political agenda, because as others have said, if the jibe was free of politics, people would be laughing their heads off.

Because that particular thread treats death with irreverence. I don't take part in it.... I find it distasteful, but I don't stop other people taking part.

We have thread after thread on here where people ridicule religion and people of faith. The consensus is, how stupid people are to believe fairy stories in an old book probably written by out of work camel drivers. But... if someone is perceived to have insulted Corbyn, suddenly everyone cares about disrespect being shown to Christian martyrs.
