It is your civil duty to vote it's at the core of democracy, to say 100 years ago roughly women fought, starved and died for the vote to spoil your paper is mocking that struggle.

I know so many people who have said they are either not going to bother voting or will attend and spoil their ballot as voter apathy seems to be the highest I have ever known.

So if you are of age to vote...will you get out and pop a cross in a box or just not bother?

Done my by post its going to rain tomorrow ha

I’m guessing that 100 years ago the politicians weren’t all lying , dishonest , immoral bloodsuckers..

I'm not sure I agree with that Kizzy. I would rather women attend the polling station and spoil their ballot than not turn up at all. That way, they are still respecting the women who fought to give us that right and exercising their democratic right to vote but if they don't believe in any of the parties manifestos.....why should they choose?

I will vote but I can understand the apathy.of some voters

if you spoil your paper you are not voting .. the ballot paper is void. No manifesto is going to speak to each of us individually on every policy promise as we would like. You vote by and large on the ideology that syncronises with your personal principles.
This is how I understand the ethics of voting.

Like I said to Whatsit upthread, a spoilt ballot vote is an active F-you to all parties. Not even showing up is mocking the struggles of suffrage.

It isn't it's an f you to yourself if anything as the status quo will be maintained or deteriorate it's a massive risk not to participate.

But turning up and spoiling and not turning up at all achieves the same result? There's nothing to be gained from a spoiled ballot paper. It's essentially giving up your vote.

If you live in a safe labour seat like I do, voting for anyone other than Labour is ineffective, so spoiling it is at least some form of protest.

kizzy, everyone has a right to vote, not vote, spoil their vote, what you are doing is trying to guilt people into voting, that’s not what the suffragettes fought for, they fought for the same rights as men who could choose to vote or not as they saw fit

bots 12-12-2019 06:30 AM

spoiled votes are recorded in the voting figures, apathy is recorded in the turn out.

I will not vote for people i do not believe in, its simple. That is my democratic right.

No I'm not trying to guilt trip you, I'm stating my view on this if you don't like it that's not my issue.

The suffragettes did not fight to not vote imo. They wanted to have a voice, not be voluntarily silent.

What is the point in spoiling your vote ???! , Why go to the polling station in the first place then ? .

Kazanne 12-12-2019 08:21 AM

Well according to some of the media spoilt votes achieve nothing they are simply binned and forgotten,so you may aswell stay at home.

Exactly it's stupid & pointless :bored: ,just stay home if you don't want to vote like what other people do . Why trail to the polling station just to scribble through them all like a child with crayon  .

Nicky91 12-12-2019 08:30 AM

a vote for the tories is a vote for a xenophobic dictatorship

mass immigration = mass deportation

we don't want britain to fall back into the same route as well the Nazi's back in world war 2

I wouldn't say it was apathy, more complacency. If you don't agree with the people in power enough to vote to keep them in then vote for someone else, even if they have no hope of winning, use your vote as a protest dont waste it. Remember the monster raving loony party? Many would vote for them as they were disaffected by the main parties but they still had a vote counted.
To me if you really can't bring yourself to vote for one of the parties in the running this at least makes some sense as a protest vote.

a spoilt vote is counted, so how is that silence?, it is interesting how you chop and change depending on the topic, you are all for protest except when you don't want protest
