Yes so the New big signs
can be filled with new information
on the History of each Village.

We as a country profited from the Slave Trade and the empire left the world in a worse state than it was before it was a thing. Acting annoyed because you can't handle the dark parts of your own history is just the height of immaturity. The arrogance of this country is a constant source of irritation for me, we're think we're perfect, beyond blame, but we're not. Our history is vile and telling people to get over it instead of accepting that, for many people, we were the bad guys is just gross.

We can't look down on America and go 'This isn't America' because we helped the slave trade grow, it's as much a stain on our history as it is America's.

The British Empire was glorious.

I suspect every country in the world will have a dark past if you delve deep enough..

Let it go peeps...get it go.

Actually owning slaves has always been illegal here, it says so in the Magna Carta. While some wealthy, upper-class business men may have traded to make their money, we has a nation of people have never took part in slavery.

In terms of anti-slavery, we probably rank the number 1 country in the World.

Magna Carta hasn't been relevant for centuries, which is why the covid-denying, anti-mask movement was mercilessly mocked for it's invocation of the MC a few months ago.

Us and Portugal were the main movers of slaves, which means we went to Africa, either traded for, or rounded humans up, and then took them to America to sell and trade. If you think that's not taking part, then I don't know what to tell you. That's also the abridged version, which means I've omitted a lot of the details of what happened during those times.

What does this even mean in this thread?

It’s History...some of it was ugly and inhumane.. but it’s done and dusted. Let’s learn from it and move on.

No, you don't understand. History lessons need to be devoted to telling kids how awful the country they were born in used to be before living memory, and town mayors need to make big speeches to apologise!!!

...I agree that the past shouldn’t be erased and that it’s there for learning and understanding...with any historical figure, it’s important to know the person who I’d being tributes with things like statues etc... because that image/that likening means nothing ...anyways, specific to this article and thread...?....the report was obviously requested and written because of the substantial funding being given ...I don’t know what the local ethnic communities are but the thing with that would be to balance it and also give such funding to local ethnic youth projects and charities...because surely that would help define the progressions from unpleasants of the past...

I never even learned about our role in the slave trade at all. I only learned about it aftewards. We teach people the version of history that paints us in the best light and it's bull****.

As were the Pyramids, and 99% of the world. Though acknowledging it is a good thing.

Unironically, this. History should teach us how bad things were in the past, so that we can learn from the mistakes of those who came before us, that is why history is important to begin with.

The entitlement of this post.

Slaves have built, or the proceeds of the slave trade has funded, buildings and institutions all over the world. The pyramids, the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal. The Whitehouse was built by slaves, as was the Capitol Building, even the statue on top of the Capitol was made by a slave. Wall Street, named after an actual wall built by slaves, was the biggest slave market in the US. BMW, Audi, Volkswagen all used slave labour and are still trading healthily today along with numerous other German companies. Most people I know are quite knowledgeable about the slave trade. My husband, born and educated in the US, was taught about the slave trade. I think that's all we can do, know what happened and know that it's still happening, and try to bring about an end to it.

Ammi 10-02-2021 02:04 PM

...it would be nice to also invest in funding for local black youth projects etc as well to promote and further equality....that might already be being done, but it’s important that it’s known to be actively so ...as well as the funding for the preservations...

Thats why I said 'Learn from it'....its part of our History so it shouldnt be shoved under the Carpet.
However....I really dont see the need for Town Mayors to make big speeches apologising....

Yup, some countries still continue to be disgusting.

In Dubai, or rather UAE (Dubai is a city) you can be arrested and tortured for being gay. The BBC saw fit to spend to fukkton of money to film a Doctor Who special there, in the modern day centre of slavery and homophobia ... RTD couldn't even go on the shoot there!

Beso 10-02-2021 08:13 PM

I think we should nuke Germany.
