Why, what has happened that was homophobic?

Maybe these hypophetical people want it cancelled for reasons that arne't homophobic. Maybe the organiser of it uses vulgar language like Chubby Brown does. If that's a legitimate reason to exclude Chubby, then surely it's a legitimate reason to cancel any event?

Rather perhaps it would be good to have a performance, on the night he was due to
appear, by the amazing range of talented musicians, comics and performers, who have
made their lives in Sheffield from abroad, whether as refugees or migrants. That would be
real talent, not cheap hate.

Sure, the day any of that hypothetical in your head actually happens we'll make sure pride is cancelled if that makes you feel better?

It's not about making me feel better, I feel great already. it's about making life fair for everyone, and shining a light on the tyrants and bullies in our society.

Mystic Mock 05-09-2021 04:56 PM

Thanks to the members that have explained the situation to me.

My opinion from what I'm hearing here is let him still do the gig, but maybe dial down the more controversial jokes.

Imo Comedy is meant to be shocking to some extent, obviously I probably need to see one of his gigs to tell if he is more of a Seth MacFarlane or more of a Jim Davidson where the latter does genuinely come across as very intolerant of certain groups of people.

But if it's more of a Seth MacFarlane routine then the Sheffield Venue would be out of order.

Wasn’t anywhere near as bad as Jimmy Carr or Frankie Boyle when I saw them. How they get away with some of their material and manage to sustain careers on TV I’ll never know. :omgno:

Nice to hear from someone who has actually been to a live show...!

I don't think many would disagree with that? However pride events not getting shut down because of scenarios that haven't even happened isn't a genuine example of unfairness.

But sometimes in life you have to use hypophetical situations to explain your point. It's not a bad thing, it's just a method of explaining something.

You should be banned from the town of Morecambe for that comment.

"Thousands have petitioned for Roy Chubby Brown to play in Sheffield,"

Its a real shame they stopped him

Marsh. 05-09-2021 05:36 PM

Whether his material is offensive or not, it's not funny.

Chubby Brown is an obnoxious twit. Not just on stage either.:fist:
He was cancelled at his local venue, then all of a sudden it was just a postponement, after someone on the council left.

GoldHeart 05-09-2021 11:57 PM

Never liked him or his style of "comedy" anyway , so i don't really care if they cancel his shows.

Livia 06-09-2021 09:30 AM

I'm not a fan of his comedy but the venue cancelling because they don't like his jokes... sounds about right these days. As others have mentioned in this thread, Frankie Boyle and Jimmy Carr are both guilty of the worst, most obnoxious humour. And pop stars followed by very young girls - Selina Gomez for example - with foul language warnings on their albums... and don't get me started on Naked Attraction, Love island, Married at First Sight.

People obviously don't have enough to do these days so they spend their time sticking their beak into other people's business and making decisions for other adults.

That just happens not to welcome Chubby Brown and his fans. Not really that diverse and welcoming are they. This person is telling porkies.

The owners of the Hall decided they didn't want this comedian performing there, it is within their rights to do so. Lots of children throwing their toys out of the pram in this thread.

They're lying when they claim to be diverse and welcoming though, as we can see here. They're obviously not.

They would be worried incase he mentioned the muslim grooming gangs

But these people who you are defending are the bigots, they're being prejudice against Chubby's act. So some bigots you side with and some you don't.

Telling the difference between satire and actual bigotry isn't really all that difficult. I wonder, do those who seem not able to do it really not know the difference? Or are they simply pretending when it suits to do so?

Reminds me of the people who think something like South Park "is being racist" when Token is repeatedly shot by the police, or "is being antisemitic" when Cartman marches through the streets dressed as Hitler.

i.e. completely missing the point.

I'm not a huge Jimmy Carr fan - I think (like Frankie Boyle, actually) he leans too heavily into "shock value" in his comedy, but he is essentially a satirist. The likes of Royston Vasey and Jim Davidson are just ... not.

Speaking of his real name... I have to imagine that the reason the creators of The League of Gentlemen (satirists) called their fictional town "Royston Vasey" flies completely over the heads of those people.

Nazi Germany didn't happen overnight. There was stepping stones.

A better comparison is communism. "Even" now China bans media which depicts people questioning authority, ghosts, and recently, effeminate men.

And China is the nation which organisations (and especially Hollywood) feel the need to bend the knee to in order to get money.

There aren't any Nazis any more (not counting the odd nazi cosplayer who gets radicalised online) but there are communists.
