Salman Rushdie wrote a work that is seen as Blasphemous, and he should have known that it was so. He should also have known how seriously the Islamic world considers Blaspheme. Remember the disgraceful cartoons of the Holy Prophet Mohammed, and the hurt that caused?

He trampled on the feelings of millions of people with that book, and his work has been responsible for many deaths. Blaspheme is a bit more than a mild insult. The word comes from two Greek words which translate as "Injurious speech". Lets not forget the tax payers money that was used to protect him here in the UK

Salman has been the author of his own misfortune.

Even in the UK you can be prosecuted for things you say and write under UK law.

But blasphemy is not one of them

Incitement to racial hatred is one area that the law covers, say something anti-Semitic or Islamophobic and you can be prosecuted.

At one time we did have a Blaspheme law, which was used by Mary Whitehouse to successfully prosecute the editors of Gay News for publishing a blasphemous poem about Jesus.

They weren't disgraceful at all. If anyone gets "hurt" over paedophile warlord being cartooned, they're the problem.

They were so disgraceful and insulting that not a single tabloid in the UK printed them.

Only because they knew they'd get murdered. That's the disgraceful part of it.

But shouting "fire" in a theatre isn't really one's own opinion on something, unless there really was a fire. It's a dangerous act.

Having an opinion and being critical of an idea is totally different.

The fact someone has to resort to violence instead of debate against that opinion shows up their interpretation of the idea to not seem very logical and shows them to be a danger to a free society, a danger like someone shouting "fire" in a theatre.

I saw Geert Wilders also receiving similar threats on twitter yesterday.
