I agree, Iran is a fascinating country. It was the extremely wealthy that didn't want change, but I believe, if any of them had known in 1979, what they know now, very few would have wanted it.
The 1953 coup d' etat, instigated by the British, to overthrow the elected PM and form monarchical rule was seen initially as a good thing, especially in the West. Although on the outside, it now looked like a very democratic country, it was anything but. The secret police of the Imperial State of Iran/Persia, were ruthless and that's why the Shah was eventually overthrown.
