ITV1 comedy series Benidorm is switching to six hour-long episodes when it returns this summer, creator Derren Litten has revealed.

The actor and writer posted via Twitter: "Don't know if I told you guys, series three all episodes are one-hour long!"

The show, which starred the late Wendy Richard, initially ran with six half-hour episodes in 2007. The following year, it was upped to an eight-episode run.

Litten also said that a one-hour special is to be expected. "With the special we been filming equivalent of 14 episodes," he tweeted.

An ITV spokesperson confirmed the special episode, telling DS it will "follow directly on after series two, so picks up on the beach at the wedding".

It was also confirmed that all the cast are back filming. The one-hour special is expected to air at the end of May.

Big mistake making the show 1 hour long, I think 30mins was just right
Also bad news for Big Brother if it returns to the Friday night slot

arista 29-04-2009 06:06 AM

No as the 1 hour is the same as 2 x 30mins joined faster.

This 30mins style is wrong on other shows
it is to short.

The late Wendy Richard was great in it,
as a guest star

BigSister 29-04-2009 11:33 AM

im dunno about the hour thing i think it might kill it half an hour was just right

Scarlett. 29-04-2009 12:28 PM

Awesome news!

Your favourite holidaymakers are back. Benidorm returns for a one-hour Summer special on ITV1 that delivers thrills, drama, action and, of course, award-winning comedy.

Will Mel survive?
Will Mick be left stranded in a Benidorm jail?
Will Janice run off with Jack?
Will The Oracle ever reach dry land?
And just how will Madge cope?!!

Set in the all inclusive Solana resort with an award-winning ensemble cast, the first two series of Benidorm have proved a huge hit for ITV1 with the show being nominated for a British Comedy Award and winning The National TV Award for Best Comedy on TV last year.

The one-hour Summer special – created and written by the award-winning Derren Litten – picks up exactly where series two ended.

The Garveys - Mick (Steve Pemberton – Whitechapel, The League of Gentlemen), Janice (Siobhan Finneran – Unforgiven, Clocking Off), their kids Telle and Michael and Telle’s baby son Coolio - are all back and, as usual, find themselves at the centre of the action.

The Garvey’s outspoken grandma Madge (Sheila Reid – Midsomer Murders, Monarch of the Glen) is distraught her new husband Mel (Geoffrey Hutchings – Eastenders, Cor Blimey) is unconscious in hospital…. but she’s soon to be faced with a much more dangerous situation.

The Oracle (Johnny Vegas – Ideal, Bleak House) was last seen flying out to sea on a rogue paraglider, as his mum Noreen (Elsie Kelly – The Famous Five, Crossroads) looks on.

Kate (Abigail Cruttenden – Foyle’s War, The Robinsons) and Martin (Nicholas Burns – Nathan Barley, Man Stroke Woman) are back and celebrating Kate’s surprise pregnancy news.

Gay couple Gavin (Hugh Sachs - The Catherine Tate Show, Him and Us) and Troy (Paul Bazely – Vanity Fair, Green Wing) return and find themselves drawn into the Garvey’s dramatic situation.

Good-hearted swingers Donald (Kenny Ireland – Rose and Maloney, New Tricks) and Jacqueline (Janine Duvitski – One Foot in the Grave, Abigail’s Party) end up becoming ‘unofficial babysitters’ to the Garvey kids.

The special also features a return appearance from Elliott Jordan (EastEnders) who plays Jack – the local bar boy who declared his love for Janice at the end of series two.

Michaela Hennessy-Vass, ITV’s Commissioning Editor of Comedy says: ”Our favourite characters have returned with a spectacular and of course very funny show. I’m thrilled that once again Derren Litten, the writer and creator has delivered a holiday gem for ITV viewers. We have a great cast and production team and as a result a fabulously funny show”.

Benidorm is written and created by Derren Litten, produced by Jo Willett, and directed by BAFTA award winning Sandy Johnson (Jonathan Creek, Kingdom, Love Soup). Sophie Clarke-Jervoise is executive producer.

Sophie Clarke-Jervoise, from Tiger Aspect, adds “We’re delighted that Benidorm is making a welcome return to ITV1 for this one-off Special. Fans are in for a treat with an action-packed comedy adventure which picks up where series 2 ended, and sets the scene for the forthcoming third series in the autumn.”

Benidorm is a Tiger Aspect production for ITV1.

I don't think its a mistake, I always thought it felt cut short with 30 minutes

I hope ITV move it back to a Thursday (nout to do with BB), I preferred it then. Its pretty easy to forget to catch up with it especially as they don't repeat it much, but BB is on about 6 times on Saturday

Madge is amazing, I remember most of her one liners :blush2:

"when my waters broke I was half way up some ladders cleaning windows. Mrs Carr next door thought I wrung my shammy out and missed the bucket"

"I'm not one of those racialists. We had a black man live next door to us once and he was no bother"

"You're a big fat lad aren't you?"

"Lets get the bull out and stick some fireworks up its a*se"

:laugh3:

BigSister 30-05-2009 05:39 PM

arista 31-05-2009 08:59 PM

That was a Great 1 Hour Episode
Second to none.

Scarlett. 31-05-2009 09:05 PM

I dont think I have ever laughed so much at a TV show, it was epicly brilliant

BigSister 31-05-2009 09:16 PM

That doctor who said hes been good in 20 years hahaha then he got mentioned at the end
Then when mel arrived to save them

Scarlett. 31-05-2009 09:35 PM

I was literally LMAO when Mel turned up in the chopper xD

Spike 01-06-2009 02:57 PM

It took a while for the episode to get going and it wasn't a very good with predictable and poor comedy lines. But there were some hilarious moments especially when Madge and her daughter was kidnapped and when Mel turned up on the chopper.
The 1 hour format doesn't work and I hope ITV re-think their decision into turning into 1 hour episodes for series 3
I also loved how the episode set up series 3 for everyone to return but some character like Johnny Vegas' character and his mother need to be axed

Gemmer-x 02-06-2009 07:05 PM

bahahahha i loved this <3
amazing when Mel saved the day :D

Scarlett. 02-06-2009 07:35 PM

I got the DVDVDDVD today :3
