And usually on message boards, admins and mods don't have access to private messages. They can sometimes find out how many you have or who's sent what to whom, but I've yet to be on a message board where the admin can view the content of private messages.

Didn't see that. Admittedly I've only moderated on VB, Ikonboard, Invison and Ezboard so not sure of the setup here. Might be that they can literally just see the inbox (ie amount of messages, message title, who sent them etc) without having access to the message content, although I'm not sure now.
