Antonio Valencia's wing-play masterclass wowed United fans around the world at the weekend - and won him the Man of the Match award on ManUtd.com.

The Ecuadorian international, clearly revelling in his return to the right wing, received almost two thirds of the votes cast after the champions' 3-0 win over Bolton Wanderers. His match statistics suggest this was well deserved - he created five chances for his team-mates and delivered a dozen crosses while 91 per cent of his passes found a player in a red shirt.

A United fan posting on our message board as 'Giggsy The True Midfield Magician' commented: "This was probably Valencia's best game in a United shirt. He was immense against Bolton. He is actually such an unselfish player, always looking for the pass. He only shoots when there is no other option. Since November he has really picked up his game."

Paul Scholes was the runner-up in our poll with 18 per cent of the votes, following his goalscoring return to the Old Trafford turf. Meanwhile another accomplished performance by his central-midfield partner Michael Carrick (9 per cent) edged out Danny Welbeck (6pc) and Nani (2pc) in the chase for third place.

Shame about Berbatov. Don't blame him. He expects to be getting games and fair enough. Always gonna love the guy.

Sunday could very well go a long way to decide the title.

bbfan1991 16-01-2012 11:19 PM

Well we obviously need a United win and for Spurs to either beat or draw with City.

Nemanja Vidic has warned Manchester United's Premier League rivals that they will be stronger in the second half of the season.

United trail leaders Manchester City by three points and were knocked out of the Champions League before Christmas.

But the United captain believes the club are starting to overcome injury problems that have hit the club.

Vidic, ruled out for the rest of the season, told the BBC: "How we finish is most important. We will be better."

It's not bad for the city of Manchester to have two teams competing for the title - as long as we finish in first place

United have been hit by injuries in defence, with Rio Ferdinand, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones having all missed games over the past month.

The Old Trafford club failed to overtake City after suffering successive top-flight defeats against Blackburn and Newcastle in December.

But Vidic, 30, told BBC North West Tonight: "I'm positive. We've had problems with injuries but it seems all the players are getting back and getting fitter.

"We will be better than we were in the first half of the season.

"It's not bad for the city of Manchester to have two teams competing for the title - as long as we finish in first place."

Fellow defender Smalling, 22, believes only Sir Alex Ferguson's side can take heart from the fact they are challenging for the title despite a number of injuries this season.

Smalling, now fully recovered from tonsillitis, told the club's website: "We've probably had more injuries than any other club in the league.

"Not many teams have lost players of the calibre of Nemanja and Darren Fletcher for such lengthy periods.

"And yet we're still going strong, we're still challenging for the lead."

England defender Smalling returned in the FA Cup victory against Manchester City then sat out Saturday's win over Bolton, but hopes to play at Arsenal on Sunday.

"People were starting to write us off," he added. "Instead of crumbling we went to City and beat them on their home turf, even if we made hard work of it in the second half.

"Winning that game showed a lot of character."

Meanwhile, United full-back Ritchie de Laet has returned to Old Trafford after his season-long loan move to Norwich was terminated five months early.

Totally agree. Its testament to Ferguson and the team that we're even still in the title race. Would be interesting to see how City cope if they had a lot of defenders out injured.

Manchester United winger Ashley Young claims he is making good progress on his recovery from a knee injury.

Young joined Old Trafford from Aston Villa in the summer for a fee believed to be around £18 million, but has been out of action since December 21 after sustaining a knee problem in the 5-0 win over Fulham.

The England international may not be back in first-team action until February, with Sir Alex Ferguson claiming he’d be out for another month on January 8, but Young is optimistic over his recovery.

Speaking at the Betfair presents Man Utd live webcast at Old Trafford, Young said: "It's going well. I've been in the gym most days but it's getting there and hopefully I'll be back soon.”

Young has been buoyed by the start to his Old Trafford career and claims that the standard required to compete for a place at Manchester United has improved his ability.

"I'm enjoying it," he said. "From the minute I stepped into the building, I was welcomed with open arms by everybody in the squad.

"All the staff have been brilliant and to play alongside so many world-class players was always a dream for me.

"It brings your game on and you go up to another level. You experience that straight away. There's competition for places all around the team so you've always got to be on your toes.

"I think my game has come on. I've added different things to my game. Obviously, we're playing a different style than it was at Aston Villa and I've had to adapt.

"When I've gone away with England and the likes of Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick, I've got to know the boys there and how they play."

The midfielder is also eagerly anticipating the trip to the Emirates to face Arsenal on Sunday, even though it remains extremely unlikely that he’ll be able to play any part.

United currently sit second in the Premier League, three points behind leaders Manchester City, while Arsene Wenger's lie in fifth, four points off a Champions League place.

Dimitar Berbatov's agent has insisted the Manchester United striker is not going anywhere in this month's transfer window.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed the club will invoke a clause in the striker's contract, which expires at the end of the season, that will extend his deal by a further 12 months.

Yet there is gossip that a host of clubs, including Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, are ready to test United's resolve to keep the 30-year-old with bids of around £8million.

But Berbatov's agent, Emile Danchev, said: "Usually I don't comment on speculation. But the only thing that I can say is that at this moment the eventual transfer of Berbatov to another club is not on the agenda."

Leverkusen, who sold Berbatov to Tottenham in July 2006, confirmed that they have no interest in re-signing their former striker.

Chief executive Wolfgang Holzhauser said: "I read that Dimitar flew over to Frankfurt and that we were there for him to negotiate a transfer.

"That was interesting news to me.

"This is nothing we are looking forward to at this point in time - and I would also say we are not after him in the coming summer."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed suggestions that Danny Welbeck is refusing to sign a new contract with the club.

Welbeck was reported this week to be stalling on a new deal in a similar fashion to Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison, with the 21-year-old supposedly angling for a £60,000-per-week deal.

However Ferguson has moved to quash rumours that there is an issue with the striker who has scored eight goals in all competitions this season.

"There is no issue," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"We know the situation well with Danny. There is nothing to worry about there."

The United boss also had encouraging words regarding the fitness of injured duo Ashley Young and Tom Cleverley.

He said: "They are doing a good running programme at the moment and their fitness levels are good."

On Cleverley, he added: "I am hopeful in 10 days' time, he will be playing football on the training side of it.

"That is the plan anyway, unless there is any recurrence. We can kick on and then it depends how he does in training.

"His fitness levels should be fine and if that is correct, he could cope right away. You are talking about a week."

Ferguson also had positive news on the fitness of defensive duo Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, with both defenders expected to be available for selection on Sunday against Arsenal.

"Phil and Chris will be fit," he said.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Javier Hernandez is finally ready for lift-off.

The Mexican was one of the stand-out successes of last season, arriving as a £7million unknown but ending the campaign as a player with predatory instincts whose goals helped propel the Red Devils to their record 19th league title.

Unfortunately for the 23-year-old, this term has proved to be a bit of a trial.

After missing the first part of United's pre-season tour of the United States as he recovered from his commitments at the Gold Cup, where he finished top scorer, Hernandez eventually linked up with his team-mates in New Jersey.

Yet he ended his first day of training in hospital after taking a nasty bang on the head and since then, he has struggled for any continuity.

Hernandez made his re-appearance against Tottenham in August but has since taken another blow on the head and suffered an ankle injury.

It has restricted him to just six goals this season and, currently, he is being overlooked in favour of Danny Welbeck.

However, Ferguson has noticed a general improvement in standards and believes Hernandez is now ready to show the form that made him such a crowd favourite.

"Javier has had his issues this year," said Ferguson.

"He had that concussion, then he had another head knock and then an ankle injury.

"He has not got the season going yet.

"But he is looking well now and his training has been fantastic. That is a bonus because you want variations in the striking department anyway.

"And if we get Hernandez back into the frame what an addition he can be. We know the goals he can score."

Yet Hernandez must first squeeze his way past Welbeck, who, despite his own injury woes, has been in fine form.

The 21-year-old has scored eight times and produced all-round form that has led to him becoming established in Fabio Capello's England squad.

Ferguson has dismissed talk of problems in negotiations over a new contract and instead concentrated on the physical development of a player he doesn't feel will fully mature for another couple of years.

"Danny has had a couple of injuries this season but he is still growing into himself," said Ferguson.

"He has got a bit to fill out yet, which is an amazing thing to say because he is such a big lad.

"But in two years you will see a different human specimen, I am sure of that. He seems to be growing all the time."

Wayne Rooney has hailed Antonio Valencia's return to top form.

Valencia had endured a difficult start to the campaign, missing the entire pre-season and the first month of competitive action after suffering an ankle injury during the Copa America.

The winger then ended up playing right-back to cover for Manchester United's defensive injury problems.

However, ahead of Sunday's crucial trip to Arsenal, the 26-year-old is hitting the mark again. And Rooney is delighted.
'Antonio has been playing brilliantly,' said the United striker. 'He is back to his best and when he is like that he is so difficult to defend against.

'It is great for the forwards because he is so good at delivering the ball into the box quickly.'
Valencia's contribution helped United make a speedy return to winning ways after their unexpected setbacks against Blackburn and Newcastle over Christmas.

Before that, the Red Devils had been breathing heavily down the necks of leaders Manchester City after recovering from the 6-1 derby defeat by taking 25 points from a possible 27.

They are now in the tricky position of playing catch-up, right at the start of a run of fixtures that sees them tackle four major rivals in their next six league games, in addition to next weekend's FA Cup fourth round clash with Liverpool.

Even Sir Alex Ferguson concedes it will be the period that will define United's season. And Rooney is just glad the Red Devils have thrown off the mid-season shackles attached to prevent a repeat of their derby debacle.

'The chances are coming again now,' he said. 'Those games when we were winning 1-0 were really important. We had to defend and be solid as a team.

'Now we are starting to score a few more goals again.'
Injuries are starting to ease too. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are due to return for the Arsenal encounter, whilst Tom Cleverley and Ashley Young should be back in a matter of weeks from their long-term problems.

The returns are being welcomed, as is news of a potential bid for Crystal Palace's England Under 21 full-back Nathanial Clyne, who is out of contract in the summer, because Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher have both been ruled out for the season. But Smalling concedes the constant changing has been disruptive.

'Nobody could have foreseen all the injuries we have had,' said the England defender. 'At the start of the season we had good numbers and good quality.

Dream team: Valencia and Rooney have combined for many of the striker's goals for United
'With so many injuries, the form was bound to dip once or twice. But we are all pulling together and there have been plenty of good results.'
It is the bad ones that attract the attention though. Should United suffer their fourth defeat of the season this weekend and find themselves six points adrift of Manchester City, who take on Tottenham a couple of hours earlier, the critics will be out again.
Such criticism is a new experience for Smalling, who won a Premier League winners' medal in his first season with the Old Trafford outfit.

However, he understands the demands of playing for such a huge club and the reaction that comes with failure.

'I can understand the criticism because we are behind City in the league, and the expectations of this club - from both inside and out - are massive,' he said. 'If we are not on top, everyone is asking why, and rightly so.

'Finishing second with more points that we collected last season won't make us feel any better about ourselves. The only objective is to win the league.'
