COLD Feet star John Thomson is to join Coronation Street full time.

John, 39 — who appeared in three episodes in December as electrician-turned-children’s entertainer Jesse Chadwick — returns this spring.

And he will soon get together with Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver), before moving in with Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne).

A source said: “Producers went the extra mile to get him. He’s worked with Chris and Sue before and the chemistry between them was perfect.”

John, who found fame as Pete Gifford in Cold Feet, said: “I knew I was coming back this time because they gave me a surname!”

Kingdom star John — a Corrie extra 20 years ago — first appeared in December dressed as a cowboy for Amy McDonald’s birthday party in The Rovers.

He took a shine to Eileen when she stepped in to play his Indian princess sidekick after his girlfriend dumped him.

Awards may have been a bit thin on the ground for Coronation Street last year, but it beat the other soaps in the most important contest - the battle for viewers.

Figures recently released by BARB show that in 2008 Coronation Street had the fifth highest ratings of all programmes across all channels. Eastenders was eighth, and Emmerdale only managed 20th.

The highest-rated programme was the Christmas showing of the new Wallace and Gromit film, which of course starred former Corrie star Sally Lindsay, so I think we can lay a little claim to that one as well.

Emails are finding their way to my inbox asking when Julia Haworth will return to Coronation Street as Claire Peacock. Julia is currently on maternity leave from work on the Street after giving birth to a baby girl in July last year. She'll be back on our screens in the next few weeks as she's involved in the upcoming haunted hat story, oh yes!

Did you know that Julia Haworth is one of only a few Coronation Street actors who have their own, official website? For a complete list, click here.

Oh what Joy Claires back! Thatll be fun!...I didnt even notice she'd gone!

Ellis 23-01-2009 01:21 PM

Oh no Claire's back! She's the most boring character ever. It's been nice not having the Peackocks for a while, and now we'll have to endure more irksome scenes with Claire again! I hope they don't have anymore petty storylines, like that awful houseswap!

Scarlett. 23-01-2009 01:22 PM

Lol, she'll probably be put to better use than before

Ellis 23-01-2009 01:24 PM

Let's hope so! I couldn't stand her back before she left. They've done a good job of keeping her absence quiet. I've barely noticed tbh.

30stone 23-01-2009 01:24 PM

She was a ******, either way when did she leave and why as i didnt notice... lol

Scarlett. 23-01-2009 01:27 PM

To be fair on the actress, she hasnt had properly planned storyline since '06

She was quickly shipped out in '08 during the Steve Frost/Kim Crowther swap over

and in '07, the plot she was in was very quickly and lazily written after Madline Mccan's disappearance

And then both she and Sally were given personality transplants during that houseswap storyline. The old Claire would never have been so petty. I actually liked her before she became driftwood during Steve Frost's tyrannous era . Oh yeah, and I forgot, that awful KC story! Those are my memories of her...

NettoSuperstar! 23-01-2009 01:36 PM

whos Steve Frost/ Kim Crowther?

Scarlett. 23-01-2009 01:37 PM

I think she will be better this time round, she would have had a good storyline with the original KC storyline (Freddie going missing for 4 months)

The producers

Steve Frost brought in the Connor's and Morton's and outro'd the Baldwins
Kim Crowther came into power last year and made some of the best characters we've seen in a long time

NettoSuperstar! 23-01-2009 01:39 PM

Oh! I didnt like the Mortons. I like the new family and Davids friend. Well done Kim

Ellis 23-01-2009 01:41 PM

I'm not sure about the Windasses, they're too Emmerdale-y for my liking.

NettoSuperstar! 23-01-2009 01:42 PM

lol@too Emmerdale

Scarlett. 23-01-2009 01:44 PM

Oh Steve Frost also produced Emmerdale, he is now the exec producer

Agreed. I actually like the father, at least he showed some responsibility the other night but the uncle and the son are too...um...bullish. I'm sure there's more depth from them to come though.

Probably, I dont think Gary is long for the street though ;)

Eddie (dad) is like a PG version of Frank Gallagher IMO
