Holyrood was accused of having 'lost the plot' last night after voting for asylum seekers to have free bus passes while vulnerable pensioners lose winter fuel benefits.

The Scottish Conservatives said the situation was 'downright *scandalous' after the SNP U-turned on its plan to ditch the scheme.

The SNP and Liberal Democrats backed a Green call for the Scottish Government to 'extend free bus travel to people seeking asylum as soon as possible' before the 2026 election.

Last year, the then First Minister Humza Yousaf vowed to invest £2million in a free bus travel scheme for asylum seekers, saying it would make public transport 'fair and accessible to all'.

His successor John Swinney ditched the pledge in August amid a spending crisis. But the SNP yesterday hinted at a U-turn if the Greens backed the forth*coming Budget.
