Not sure how good a solution it is to spend billions on universal bills help rather than targeting it at the most needy

What about businesses who have no energy cap and are at serious risk of going under in droves (and also who can't really modify their own energy usage)

It is the faster way
to deal with it.

Home and Business
both need this reduction

Tens of thousands of businesses are at risk of going under without government support because of soaring energy bills, according to insolvency experts.

Red Flag Alert, which monitors the financial health of firms, told the BBC previously profitable companies are experiencing significant losses.

Among those that survive, many will be forced to make workers redundant, the consultancy said.

Firms are waiting to hear if they will get help with their energy bills.

On Thursday the government, led by new prime minister, Liz Truss, is expected to announce significant financial support for households facing an 80% rise in the energy price cap in October.

Businesses are not covered by the cap, however, and Red Flag is warning that more than 75,000 larger firms that are high energy users are at risk of insolvency or are likely to lay off staff without government support.

The government's plan is expected to include some relief for businesses - but details are not yet known.

According to Red Flag, many firms will face a choice between paying wages or paying energy bills.

"Businesses can't absorb these costs and they're going to be forced very quickly into a decision about headcount or being able to pay energy bills," said chief economist Nicola Headlam. "That's going to be the reality and it's coming down the track very quickly."

people do need to be re-educated on how to save energy, but most of the measures i've seen recommended are completely stupid. Things like switching a device from standby to off will save something like £1 per year.... why on earth would a responsible source publish something like that when our bills are thousands of pounds

Because they don't care is the simple answer. They and their publications have spent 12 years telling us that this tory was going to save Britain and awake our potential, or that tory was, whilst all the time knowing that none of their policies have ever been successful. Trickle down does not now, or has ever worked, cutting regulations only increases profits at the expense of the living standards for everyone else, the attack on workers rights only benefits the billionaires.

We've had to bail out capitalism 3 times since 2008, and giving us 20 year energy mortgages is a continuation of that thinking. Anything to keep profits for shareholders raining down.

Today Live in Parliament today
Prime Minister Truss gives
us her Energy Price Freeze.

For Business as well.

bots 08-09-2022 07:51 AM

Lets see, by my reckoning its going to be frozen at £2500 typical, which is still £700 a year more than people were paying last year

People are still getting the £400 help though so the rise will be massively dented

yes, but i dont think that will go on past this winter. I mean, i'm glad its going to be capped, and i have a fixed deal for 2 years, so I'm fine, but i still think its going to be tough for a lot of people going forward

It's a sh** idea. The poor and low paid will still suffer under Truss' plans to cut taxes and freeze energy caps.

Everyone will benefit from an energy price freeze, unless you think going up by 80% in October is not going to affect people?

Freezing the price as it is now is still more than double what I was paying last year.

And then we have the prices of food going up.

I appreciate that we are paying alot more than this time last year, however anyone on Universal credit has got 650.00 plus the 400.00 plus 150 council tax rebate (if they pay it) plus 150.00 additional credit for anyone on disability benefit so I think adding all those together they will be paying below what they paid last year, plus there is winter fuel allowance for pensioners I think? food prices are another matter but again there is help out there via food banks, and food hubs, hopefully freezing the energy prices will bring down inflation :fc: tbf it is as usual the people in the middle who get no help....well we get 400.00 I suppose but ...

Cherie 08-09-2022 09:35 AM

I am more concerned about we is going to pay for the freeze, it should 100% be from a windfall tax, not adding it to billis for decades to come

bots 08-09-2022 10:10 AM

in terms of % of GDP, the UK is currently borrowing a lot less than the other G7 countries, so we can realistically borrow more. Also, europe and the rest of the world are going to be borrowing shedloads too. Also, the freeze will push the inflation rate down which will reduce the prices of everything across the board. So, i do see the logic in it
