At around 18:00, Ukrainian State Border Guards announced that Snake Island had come under attack from Russian ships, during the first day of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.[2][3] The cruiser Moskva and patrol ship Vasily Bykov were involved in the attack, using their deck guns.[4]

When the commander of the Russian cruiser instructed the Ukrainian soldiers stationed on the island to surrender, or else be fired upon, the reply was 'Go **** yourself' (Russian: 'иди нахуй' idi nahuj).[5][6]

At 22:00 (01:00 Moscow Time, UTC+2), the State Border Guard Service announced that Russian forces had captured the island following a naval and air bombardment that destroyed all infrastructure on the island.[7][8] Thirteen Ukrainian border guards, representing the entirety of the Ukrainian military presence on the island, were killed during the battle after refusing to surrender.[9][10] President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced they will all be awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine.

It’s so tragically beautiful. These people are modern day heroes.

I knew from my very first trip to the ukraine that the people and country were special and their defiance against such a force so many times bigger than them is only further confirmation.

It’s a war crime surely?

Coward Russians just pressed a button. And for what? Some little island that posed no threat?

no russophobia towards all russians

the only guilty ones here are deluded nazi Putin and his disgusting government, Putin also makes his own public look bad towards the world, all thanks to his big ego trying to reconquer every former soviet-union nation :yuk:

not every russian agrees with their views, but most are too scared to have a own opinion since you can get arrested or even worse murdered if you are too loudly voicing your anti-putin views over there

UserSince2005 25-02-2022 08:21 AM

All russians are responsible for putin and his actions.

They need to overthrow him now.

140m people and they allow this mad man to carry on.

bots 25-02-2022 08:40 AM

it's all about timing. As the sanctions start to bite the discontent will increase. It's going to come from their own discontent

You think we're all responsible for what Johnson gets up to? And the Americans for Biden?

Boris Johnson has a party and theres an uproar.

If he did anything remotely audacious as what Putin has done the British public would have him out on his arse.

So yes if we were to let him get away with it then we would be responsible.

 clueless as ever i see

Putin has a military force backing him and his government, yes those are also guilty, but not all russian citizens support him, they are just too afraid to voice their opinions, or not showing up during election years, and those who attempt to vote get stopped by the military and told to head back or else (same apparently goes down in Belarus, with Lukashenko's military goons)

why do you think the group Little Big didn't represent them last year while they were selected for 2020, because they voiced their opinions against Putin so they got ''cancelled'' by their government so to say, since Putin decides everything there in terms of who represents them at ESC either (same was for Belarus with Lukashenko deciding those things either, hence why they got dq'd for that pro-dictatorship turd of a song)

Oh for goodness sake Nicky

There’s a war going on

Whoever is picked by Ukraine for the next Eurovision really isn’t at the top of the priority list right now

Neither is Joe Biden, that's the reason there is absolutely nothing he can do about this.

I know Trump isn't in power, I've told you, the military are in power, that's who Trump handed power over too.

I'm not talking about him running. Although he most definitely won't be. I'm saying Joe Biden isn't in power right now.

I actually think it's quite an interesting part of it and what makes the public perception of this conflict so different to other conflicts in recent memory... ... ...

Basically, the fact that both Russia and Ukraine seem to LOVE Eurovision. It's really demonstrative of something someone else said on this thread - that Ukrainians and Russians (at least, from the more populated areas of Russia) are very culturally similar to the rest of Europe. It makes it harder to detatch like the public tends to from things in the Middle East, or Africa, or China, where lots of "othering" can go on in peoples minds that makes it easier to process.

But this time? Russians and Ukrainians were on a sparkly stage with the rest of Europe less than a year ago ... Russian civilians are risking their freedom and their lives saying "we don't want this, we have friends and family in Ukraine" ... now bullets and missiles are flying. It's a strange thing to comprehend. A kind of conflict that hasn't really happened in living memory.
