Speaking as a 20 year old who has been through the recruitment process- it is drilled into you time and time again, a lot of people do think about it although many have the 'it won't happen to me' attitude.

I doubt it. At the young, immature, naive and oh so tender age of nineteen right now I have a firm grasp on the fact that, believe it or not, getting shot might just kill me.
