I think I answered this a bit flippantly when it came up before so here are the reasons for swearing being filtered / not allowed on forums...
  • It cheapens the forum. Someone who returned to the forum when Big Brother (10) was on actually said that the amount of swear words in topic titles made the forum look tacky. It's a bit like text speech, we could allow that easily but that cheapens the forum. I added '****' to the censor because I noticed someone was adding it a lot to topic titles.
  • People don't like to be sworn at, it can look aggressive when written down and cause more arguments. The point about PG films isn't really relevant because swearing in films is spoken and can easily be ironic or comic. More difficult to tell on a forum.
  • Word censors are quite common on the Internet and other forums have them.
  • The old forum had a swear-word filter. Why change?

Swear words don't cheapen the forum, bad members do. Their's an endless laundry list of other things I could point out that makes the forum look 'tacky'. Swear words being quiet a bit down on the list. Seriously, what a cop out of an argument.

Personally I think strings of astrixes everywhere makes things look tacky. In addition to the fact that people know you are cursing anyway when they see four stars in a row.

Plus as the others have said shi1t is a pretty casual word as far as swear words go. The C word I can get over but sh1t just takes the biscuit. Sure, people don't like to be swore at, but people don't like to be censored either. And I don't think sh1t is a word people use against each other. People use sh1t as a descriptive word.

If there really is an epidemic of people calling each other sh1ts, do point it out to me.

Exactly.

And James, to solve the problem, why couldn't you put in place the suggestion a few weeks back from Enid, I think it was, that there could be an option to turn the filter on in your control panel?

That makes a riddiculous, mind boggling amount of sense.

Why didn't I think of that :(.

Well the main thing that cheapens the forum is members being rude to each other, not respecting their viewpoints and causing fights so no argument there.

It's not easy to do, and it might not be practical as the censored posts would still have loads of *s in them.

Yeah but your avoiding the point ... sh1t is ambigous. Most people use the word sh1t as a descrptive word. As in ... Britney Spears is sh1t. Banning it is a step too far. Sure people use it in arguments but people also use the word 'opinion' in arguments. Sorry. Just my op****n.

Err ...

Who wants to point out the contradiction here? Because I'm past this.

Seriously, keep your F's and C's all you want, I give up, but sh1t really is taking the piss.

Stephanie 01-02-2010 05:51 PM

don't the censored posts have stars anyway? lmao.

Stu 01-02-2010 05:54 PM

Thank you. I thought I might explode if I attempted to describe how utterly hillarious that contradiction was.

I demand Jack's custom title be censored as I find it highly offensive.

Tom 01-02-2010 07:20 PM

Stu 01-02-2010 07:22 PM

King Gizzard 01-02-2010 07:28 PM

Stu 01-02-2010 07:30 PM

I also want Nathan's s****ture edited because it's too a**some for words.

Tom 01-02-2010 07:38 PM

Now the ironic thing is there are millions of ways to bypass swearing and although it shows up as **** in the thread title, the word is still in the side bar!
