- It cheapens the forum. Someone who returned to the forum when Big Brother (10) was on actually said that the amount of swear words in topic titles made the forum look tacky. It's a bit like text speech, we could allow that easily but that cheapens the forum. I added '****' to the censor because I noticed someone was adding it a lot to topic titles.
- People don't like to be sworn at, it can look aggressive when written down and cause more arguments. The point about PG films isn't really relevant because swearing in films is spoken and can easily be ironic or comic. More difficult to tell on a forum.
- Word censors are quite common on the Internet and other forums have them.
- The old forum had a swear-word filter. Why change?

Swear words don't cheapen the forum, bad members do. Their's an endless laundry list of other things I could point out that makes the forum look 'tacky'. Swear words being quiet a bit down on the list. Seriously, what a cop out of an argument.
Personally I think strings of astrixes everywhere makes things look tacky. In addition to the fact that people know you are cursing anyway when they see four stars in a row.
Plus as the others have said shi1t is a pretty casual word as far as swear words go. The C word I can get over but sh1t just takes the biscuit. Sure, people don't like to be swore at, but people don't like to be censored either. And I don't think sh1t is a word people use against each other. People use sh1t as a descriptive word.
If there really is an epidemic of people calling each other sh1ts, do point it out to me.
