This is a Big Brother forum, do you expect people to understand words with more than 2 syllables?

You are right, however as the meaning becomes better know, the dictionary will be updated.

Until then, if then comes, and I doubt it, to those who only recognise the dictionary definition i.e. the one used outside certain US states and internet forums, especially those only aware of it's primary usage, it doesn't really make sense.

Well we are on an internet forum so it makes sense to use it. Just like you used "Facepalms" it means nothing in the dictionary, yet here it is understood.

Fair point :D, though this particular Big Brother forum seems to understand them or for that matter most things less than most other first world Big Brother forums.

If it worked, you wouldn't have had to explain.

Sorry, but facepalming doesn't work on this forum, unless it is of video form ;)

Users struggle the most basic of things on this forum ;)

wtf

Ok try this one, see if it sits any better with you. You dont actually receive an infraction per se, you receive points for the infractions you have committed, (infraction as in violating a rule). The forum records these penalties/warnings under a section called Infractions.

The word infraction may have been decided by the designers of the Vbulletin program that is used as the interface for the forum.

As opposed to saying you received a penalty for your infraction of the rules, this changes in shorthand to you received an infraction.

Only if most forums use it, and so far I've only come across one in my decade and a half online.

For a forum with such disdain for that place it does seem to be suggested an awful lot here.

So, assuming 50% of those mentions are from separate forums, a few dozen thousand in a million and assuming most of those first few results are the more established of forums to mention it, due to how google weights website authority, a few dozen thousand random non-important ones at that.

InOne 02-05-2010 10:16 PM

I think Bigbrotherin has had a few too many sherberts.

We often dispose of the chaff from here over there

The two are hardly comparable parallels.

James 02-05-2010 10:38 PM

Maybe the syntax 'received a notification of an infraction' would be more to your liking?

For what it's worth though, I don't like the use of the word infraction - too technical, and not used often - I would just call it a warning.

Very true, I dont like the censorship policy over there, the in your face adverts, the page layouts, or the size of print, I am getting old and very very grumpy so the small print gets me going.

Lewis. 02-05-2010 11:43 PM

I don't think it is really anything to get confused about. It's just a word at the end of the day.. and puts the point across pretty much the same as other words.
