'Homosexual' was not a word either. Then some Psychiatrists needed a clinical name to describe a mental illness where men want sex with other men.
So they came up with Homo (men, males) Sexual (sex).
OK.
A few years later 'homosexuality' was removed from the lists of mental illnesses because of protests and activists orgs but the name stuck around.

Years later and there was no such word as 'homophobic' but some people who were not mental health professionals just started using the term to describe people who did not believe homosexuality was great.

So you see the word is not even proper and would actually describe an 'irrational fear of males or men'.
