The sun passes through loads of constellations throughout the year. A lot more than the 12 zodiacal signs we use.

But not enough to read up on it properly:

Quote:

Although not incorporated into the 12-sign zodiac, Ophiuchus and some of the fixed stars in it were sometimes used by astrologers in antiquity as extra-zodiacal indicators (i.e. astrologically significant celestial phenomena lying outside of the 12-sign zodiac proper).
(from one of your sources)
Dont you think its quite amusing some astrologers (note NOT astronomers - thickos) say the guff they have peddled the gullible as being accurate for so long now, isnt really accurate and they need to insert a new sign so the astrological industry can refleece everyone again.

Niall 13-01-2011 07:30 PM

Wikipedia have a page for it. They also have a better name too: Serpentarius. At least I can pronounce that lmao.

why is there now a 13th one?

The dates are wrong.

Fail.

Benjamin 13-01-2011 10:22 PM

In the old times there were more than 13 months, but they were not all similar in length. That is why the calender became 12 months long, to make all months similar in length. If you go back in history, none of the months from either calender are correct. ;)

GypsyGoth 13-01-2011 10:23 PM

I've never heard of Ophiuchus before, I think someone made it up as a joke.

LemonJam 13-01-2011 10:40 PM

if this were true I'd be a Sagittarius, but I doubt it is.

Nah it is a genuine constellarion on the Zodiac belt, there are at least 24 constellations on the belt. I say at least because it depends on the definition of "zodiacal" belt also whether you include whether the sun, moon and planets just touches or transits through the view of the constellation. It also depends which planets are included when talking about transits.

Heres one example

Quote:

The belt of the zodiac passes through some 24 constellations. Given that the zodiac extends eight degrees north and south of the ecliptic, an additional twelve constellations reside in part within the zodiac's belt of stars: Auriga, Canis Minor, Cetus, Corvus, Crater, Hydra, Ophiuchus, Orion, Pegasus, Scutum, Serpens and Sextans.

Kind of makes you wonder though if astrologers are going to admit the stuff they have spouted about houses, rising signs etc for the last few hundred years is all garbage.

Or what wonderful excuses they will spout for it all being "accurate". If it is and was as accurate as they would like us to believe, why change it?

GypsyGoth 13-01-2011 10:50 PM

Thanks Terry, I'm not sure I fully understand it, but I think I get the gist.

Jords 14-01-2011 12:01 AM

Ophiuchus, wtf!?

This makes me a Gemini instead of Cancer, if its true. I always hated saying Im Cancer because its freakin' Cancer but it did have me well matched (dont really believe in it, but fun to follow). Whats a Gemini like?

So all those people who've been living their lives according to what their star signs dictated have been living a lie?

Haha. Thats what you get for being a gullible tool.

and wikipedia is not official fact btw.

I'm a Sagittarius now apparently, I rather liked Capricon. I don't put any worth by fortune telling though.
