I ushered in the Verdana revolution - always willing to be charitable with emerging filter break technologies. By simply formatting a letter of the swear in Verdana - the same font the forum uses - the word would appear perfect.

James envied my cunning and has now made this previously unenforcable rule a forum priority.

Cursing is okay though.

In the past when crafting episodes of my Mystical Realms stories, I will have characters swearing, so what I did is replace most of the middle letters of the word with asterisks leaving just the first one or two letters at the beginning and at the end, so the swear word was never used

e.g taking the non swear word of "adorable" it becomes "ad****le

I know on one other forum, if you replace the letters of a swear word with asterisks in that fashion they still count that as a violation, because you are trying to get around the swear filter in their view

Is this what is meant by "breaking the swear filter", and are you saying that is the rule here as well?

Just a quick reminder that none of the above are tolerated on this forum. And you WILL be given infractions for constantly posting them.

Many members do not use MSN, so ending sentences with 'leona2' 'hee1' or whatever is very confusing for them. Along with the fact that it is plain annoying seeing the same users doing it time and time again. The odd one we can let slide, but when it turns out seemingly being in every other post, then theres a big problem.

Txt speech is also hard to understand. This has been a rule since the very beginning of this forum. A rule that people used to follow, and will start to again. And if they do not, then be expecting quite a few bans flying around. It is not hard to type out the proper English word rather than for example 'r u goin out 2nite' . And it makes it so much easier for everyone to understand what you are saying.

The swear filter is another rule that has constantly been ignored recently. As some of you know, infractions are being given for avoiding the filter. Whether you agree with the filter or not is irrelevant. It IS there, and it IS a rule. You cannot avoid the filter by accident, so you know at the time that you are breaking a rule. If you wish to continue breaking the filter, prepare for a ban, because people who do it over and over will be getting harsher infractions than the ones currently being given out, because clearly the current ones aren't working.

I am aware that I already made an announcement on this, but I want there still to be record when the announcement ends.

Also anyone who replies to this with any of the above, will receive an infraction from me :)

I'm just waiting for admin to confirm one way or the other.

At the moment, breaking the filter would be..for example, making one letter in a swear word italic so that the word still appears as normal.

I'm really not too sure what the stance is on censoring the majority of the word, dont think that should be a problem though, but worth checking :)

Hmm, see my name mentioned here, I haven't actually had much to say on this crackdown.

I guess though I have defended the filter in past, so yeah.

i dont see why because even though it was txt speech im sure everybody understood it http://www.greendaycommunity.org/For.../Dark/hmph.png

Stu 16-05-2011 09:50 PM

Okay, okay so I'm making assumptions, sorry. I can't imagine another moderator doing it. Maybe Zee or ukturtle.

I maintain that whoever modded the 'f', 'oo' and 'king' placed together to were just being anal.

Rob 16-05-2011 09:50 PM

But it was text speech, i.e against the rules.

THE SWEAR FILTER SHOULD BE OPTIONAL FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, OPTIONALLLLLLLLLL ashdjkghasdkljhfgjklashjkfgh

Stu 16-05-2011 09:54 PM

I've realized most of my hate for it actually stems from my own OCD feeling on the snowflakes in post looking 'unclean'.

Similar to the way I despise people who would otherwise have pefect English not doing things like putting full stops or using capitals.

And LOL and that...I explained above, the text speech rule is about people who make their whole post 'lyk dis' which has also been on the increase

To be honest the majority of posts with endings such as hee1, suspect and hmph would end if admin actually pulled their finger out and added the smileys to the forum. Its not the most strenuous of things to do and I do not understand why time and again they do not bother to add these simple things for us. Its so frustrating.

And if they don't bother doing these things why don't they give mods the powers for it? Surely it would make more sense for mods to do trivial things like adding smileys etc.

An optional swear filter would be good, but would it be difficult to do?

Kerry 16-05-2011 10:09 PM

I think an optional swear filter, after all this, would just cause people to swear more. Many would abuse it so their posts were little more than swearing

I wouldnt blame them if they didnt bother adding them at all with people having this kind of attitude about it :)

They havent said either way if they are even going to add them, and already they need to pull their finger out...

Tbh adding more smileys just to please a few people is very trivial compared to the amount of other things that need doing round here.

Smileys need removing if anything. Too many duplicates!

1) I only have this kind of attitude about it because I asked for this smiley - http://www.greendaycommunity.org/For.../Dark/hmph.png - to be added at the beginning of January. Yet here we are still using a link for it.

2) I could've sworn they said they'd add that^ smiley back in that thread or you'd ask about it in the towers.

3) Which brings me back to my point about giving mods the ability to add these things.

It makes sense really. :joker:
