No I'm not religious but I would never judge any one who is.

I believe that it was created to try to control people, and once it dies out something else will take it's place.

To an extent: me either thoug I can't abide those that would be termed 'bible thumpers' and want to ram their own religion/beliefs down others necks).

The only thing I always say to my mates who are religious, go to Chapel and do believe is that they have something I don't .... belief.

I kind of agree with this, the big bang theory and evolution just seem more logical to me, but to religious people it's probably the other way round.

I am not sure about it dying out soon though, people will always want to believe in a higher power /afterlife / karma etc, it helps a lot of people get through the daily grind.

I am not against religious people in general , but many wars have been fought in the name of religion which I don't understand

Not at all.

Scientific facts > bull**** stories.

Doogle 10-12-2011 06:02 PM

I haven't a clue what to believe. I don't think I want to believe anything strictly. I'm quite open-minded with it, I'll hear one theory and think "oh yeah that's quite a good idea" but then hear another view which is very different and think about that too.

King Gizzard 10-12-2011 06:57 PM

Yes, christian, but not strict

Yeah, this about sums it up for me too

GypsyGoth 10-12-2011 07:13 PM

I've got no religion, and I don't think of myself as religious at all. I don't pray for things or believe in any of the gods.

Having said that I do find religions and their rituals interesting. And for the most part I try not to offend others who worship stuff.

I guess I'm agnostic.

I'm Jewish, my faith is inherent; although I am not devout and frequently do things that I know I'm not supposed to do. I don't have any interest in convincing people that my particular faith is right and they're wrong because what you believe is your own personal business. I'm also fascinated with science and don't believe that God and science are exclusive of one another.

After listening to that, I'll need to dig out my old REM CDs..... they are 'up there' Kaz, I agree.

Bollo 10-12-2011 07:56 PM

Wish I still Had Monster & Automatic For the people, I lost all my REM cd's years ago but luckily they just bought out a best of one which i bought last week.. it takes me back

LemonJam 10-12-2011 09:06 PM

I was bought up in a religious family but always had doubts around age 11. My family don't actually know that I don't believe in God because it'd probably kill them. :\ I still think that a religious background (within reason) is good for upbringing of a child just through the (general) messages it gives.

There's a few things that have made me pretty sure that the Christian God doesn't exist:
- He supposedly gave us free will and yet also everything is preordained and God knows how our entire life will go.. those two things seem contradictory to me
- He allows atrocities to happen, fair enough you could use the free will argument and say he gives everyone a choice, but if he has the power to intervene to stop murders/genocide/etc. and refuses to, then what kind of a God is that?
- Natural disasters, I see no reason why a supposedly perfect being would create an imperfect world
- If we have to believe in God to go to heaven, then why did he not instil this knowledge of God into every human being, surely it's not fair to those who lived completely ignorant of Him to go to Hell because they didn't believe in something that was unknown to them..
- A lot of the Bible is just so contradictory
- Christians have had to constantly change their beliefs over time, as the more we understand about our existence the more it undermines what is written in the Bible. A few hundred years ago it was just fact that the World was made in 6 days, and everyone believed in Creationism, as it became clear this probably wasn't true then suddenly the Church no longer preaches these things, and instead completely changes their belief system and their teachings
- I just don't think it's fair that someone could be damned to eternal suffering just because they weren't sure of the existence of God, while someone who had lead a terrible life would go to Heaven simply if they told Jesus they were sorry
- So much of Christianity has just been borrowed from other faiths and religions

There are probably similar criticisms you can make of other Religions, Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism etc. etc. but I don't really know those very well. I think that most evidence would point to there not being a God, and I think it's more likely we're just the result of a scientific accident or whatever, but then there's still so much we don't understand about the Universe and our existence so I wouldn't rule out the prospect of a higher being, but I don't think it is to be found in any of the conventional religions
