 Sorry that was a typo I meant 5 years. Well you do only look 24. :blush2:

I got taught BODMAS/BIDMAS at school!

Me. I Am Salman 06-03-2012 07:58 PM

bidmas/bodmas - I swear it just stands for adding/subtracting etc.
Basic stuff, ytf do they feel the need to teach an analogy :suspect:

Patrick 06-03-2012 08:05 PM

The Answer is 20 - I am not wrong. Anyone that says otherwise is a ******.

Roy Mars III 06-03-2012 08:07 PM

how did you get 20

Patrick 06-03-2012 08:13 PM

Quote:

5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 x 0 = ?
Start at 5, add another 5 and another 5 = 15

Take away 5 = 10

Add 5, and another 5 = 20

Take away 5 = 15

Add a final 5 = 20

Times it by nothing = 20

Nope, you start with the multiplication first. So you do the 5 x 0 then do the rest of the sum.

If it were all to be multiplied by zero it would have to look like this

(5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5) x 0

I would love to claim it's my reasoning, but it's the the order of operations. I learnt it when I was younger.

There's a bit about it on here (yes, I know it's wiki, but I cba searching the net for a better source):

Timesing anything by zero equals zero. It'd only be 20 if you were timsing it with 1.

Ramsay 06-03-2012 08:22 PM

lol patrick

Patrick 06-03-2012 08:22 PM

-It has suddenly dawned on me that my Math's teacher clearly knows nothing-

Going to start a row on this tomorrow morning.

Ninastar 06-03-2012 08:27 PM

if anything timesed by 0 is 0, then why isnt the answer zero?

Because BODMAS. You times 5 with 0 before doing the rest of the sum.

Ramsay 06-03-2012 08:30 PM

because of the BODMAS rule
so for this sum you gotta do 5 x 0 first which is 0..then you do 5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 + 5 - 5 which is 15

Samuel. 06-03-2012 08:30 PM

-acting smart by paraphrasing Ben-

CharlieO 06-03-2012 08:32 PM

Why can people not do maths. Basically, you just do all the times and divide bits of a sum before the rest unless brackets are involved. tres simple.

Samuel. 06-03-2012 08:33 PM

Most of us haven't done it in years. And it's very rare that you actually need to use these techniques so it's easily forgotten.

Novo 06-03-2012 08:34 PM

What is the point in maths.. who created this ****

Ramsay 06-03-2012 08:34 PM

i didnt even learn this in school just found out from facebook because for ages i would pick the wrong answer then started coping on

GypsyGoth 06-03-2012 08:38 PM

Stupid sum :cloud:

I thought that this was only when there was brackets involved

this.

Ramsay 06-03-2012 08:51 PM

I thought if there was brackets involved the answer would be 0 but since there isnt we do is that way ^ ?
