I actually think in the long run Channel 4 intended to bring back the show. As in, they wanted to let the show go and they probably knew no other channel would bother picking it up - so they knew in 5, 10, 20 years time they could bring it back, revive it and suit it for a modern audience that could be drawn into the concept of it.
I like the analogy someone else posted in another topic that Big Brother is just like Doctor Who. It's a timeless format but has just turned far too away from what it was. Give it a rest and when it comes back it will hit off again and be more popular than ever. Doctor Who is a clear crystal example of how by leaving a show to rest for years, it can prolong the life for the format later on. Doctor Who is now one of the most popular shows on TV, it pulls in millions of viewers and it's fan base has grown expediently.
Channel 5 is driving the civilian show into the ground - and that really will lead to it never ever coming back.
