I did wonder as we have had one of the better summers in a while, whether that would herald a hard Winter. I like Winter, but this one sounds like it could be quite harsh, blizzard type weather can be quite nasty.

Ok, but know that for a large section of the community winter is going to be very long and very hard. There's a distinct possibility many won't survive it, young and old alike.....
Enjoy! :D

Yes and since 2010 it's become a reality.
In 2004 the average annual duel fuel bill was £540 in 2013 it's £1340 and they are due to rise again by 2014 by 8-10%.

Do you not feel raising energy prices by 10% just prior to winter pernicious?
Raise earlier to offset the winter demand if needs be.
Nowhere in my post did I suggest winter weather could be avoided josy

The point of my post Kizzy was that we can't do anything about it, we cant change the weather and we can't change the fuel cost hikes, of course the rising prices has a terrible effect on people but we are powerless to do anything about it.

Every year we hear about these terrible winters that we are going to be hit with and every year we hear that people are going to lose their lives because they can't afford the fuel bills but in reality all we can do is prepare for winter the best we can.

The fuel companies are running a business and the best time for them to raise prices is obviously the winter.

This, and also I think we can all probably do with using a bit less fuel and be more economical, when you consider very few houses had central heating before the 70s, we are a bit soft now I think. I remember waking up when I was young to frost patterns inside the windows, they were magical but it was bliddy freezing when getting dressed.

It did sound a bit glib, put up and shut up is an option yes I suppose.
They are yes, and from a business point of view that makes sense but ethically it's wrong imo.
The British Red Cross have recently added Britain to their list of countries where some require food aid.. is this right?

Of course it isn't right, that's a pretty pointless question here tbh and isn't anything to do with this thread.

It's not an argument... It's a discussion.
Anticipating bad weather has a direct link to a discussion on fuel costs, if you don't want to be part of the discussion josy that's fine.
Cherie I remember that too, the days before central heating. You put the gas fire on in the morning or lit the coal fire/ wood burning stove with back boiler to heat the water....
My point is you could.... as opposed to can't afford to.

smudgie 13-10-2013 02:22 PM

We are definitely softer now, comes with people having central heating.

Continental quilts help as well.

I can remember people piling their coats on top of the blankes to keep themselves warm in the seventies.
No winter fuel payments then either if I remember correctly.

Really bad side of loads of snow is that our daughter wont get home for Xmas.:bawling:

I'm not sure they could afford to heat their houses back in the day that is why heating was a luxury!, I'm not saying its right, I'm just saying whilst we have no control over the weather and price hikes, we do have control over how much energy we use ourselves and maybe we as a consumer need to rethink how we live our lives and act accordingly, switching energy providers is a nonsense as whilst there may be savings in the short term, in the long term you end up paying more (at least that has been my experience), the only way to guarantee lower bills is to just use less unfortunately!
