I watch a fair bit on there... Stacey Dooley's docs , Family Guy, the random 9pm docs they have which are usually good. Old before my time was really good, can't remember when that was on. I'd definitely miss it if it went.

Well of course there's Only Connect, the most critically acclaimed quiz show of the last few years, which has done so successfully it is being moved to BBC2 for it's tenth series.

BBC Four is also very much responsible for the UK's love of Scandinavian dramas, with the likes of Borgen, The Bridge, The Killing and Wallander. The effect of this is very much visible in current culture, especially since their popularity on the channel has caused UK remakes of some of these shows.

Then there's BBC Four's comedy output. Charlie Brooker, one of the most well known satirists currently doing the rounds in the UK got his start on the channel, with Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe had five series on the channel, which lead to him doing shows such as You Have Been Watching, How TV Ruined Your Life, Newswipe and writing Black Mirror.

They were also the first UK Channel to broadcast shows like Mad Men, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Flight of the Conchords, Parks & Recreation and even The Thick of It.

One of my personal favourite shows of the last decade, Dirk Gently, only ran for four episodes, but that show never would've even been broadcast on any other channel. BBC Four isn't a channel made for huge viewing figures, far from it. Any show that does successfully gets moved to channels more in the spotlight, such as BBC Two, because BBC Four is a testing ground for shows that would not get produced on any other channel because there "isn't an audience for them". BBC Four allows for programs about things more niche, more specific, and generally caters to an audience which are not getting what they want from other channels. It is due to this that it is imperative BBC Four is saved, even at the loss of BBC Three.

^ you're overthinking things, if they merge bbc two & four it would be perfectly fine. forget about this 'testing ground for new shows' rubbish, the point of the bbc before anything is to provide a public service yet they're taking away their only channel which caters for teenagers & young adults

An audience which prefers seeing content online, which is where BBC Three is being moved to. BBC Three is not being taken away, but being moved somewhere it makes a lot more sense to be. Three airs a lot more repeats than Four, and as such makes more sense on the iPlayer, if one channel did have to get moved entirely.

Merging Two and Four would definitely cause a lot of Four's programming to be lost or simplified (although not as much as some people think), but something that would absolutely be lost is BBC Four's identity and character, something I think Three will retain in it's move online.

can't say I'm fussed, there are other channels putting out the Family Guy/American Dad reruns (and to be honest I think we've all seen each episode about 40 times anyway?) and the best of the rest will be picked up by others.

too much crap and trashy TV to be a loss to me.

and lol @ the usual "i don't watch something so it MUST be bad!" comments re: bbc four. get some culture.

We shouldn't pay for it indeed! Just so they can skip adverts!
I'd rather have adverts than lose bbc three on the tv

that's a bit of a dumb generalisation, I HATE watching programmes online
and if that's the case then they should get rid of bbc two altogether. or that random alba channel

They should get rid of BBC Two all together, it gets a hell of a lot more funding for a lot less quality output, but unfortunately Two is far too embedded. Realistically, Two's original programming could be dispersed between One, Three and Four and things would work out a lot better, considering Two has no particular character to it.

It was always going to be between Three and Four, and Three's content just adapts better to the online environment.

Jack_ 05-03-2014 05:32 PM

If the move to online turns out to be true it may be interesting, as I've wondered sometimes about how eventually we may end up in a situation where most TV shows are available on the internet to watch when people want to, and so BBC3 could pave the way in that respect.

I still stand by what I said though, if you close BBC3 you're cutting off the one channel that the public service broadcaster is providing for young adults, personally I think that's going against the remit of the BBC and isn't acceptable. The criticism at BBC4 is unjust, and I don't dislike that channel at all - they brought Parks and Rec to the UK for one thing, but their shows do overlap with BBC2, and I'm sure there could be a way to rebrand the three new existing channels to have family entertainment, sport and drama on BBC1, cutting edge documentaries, historical and cultural based and up and coming shows on BBC2 and teen dramas, comedies, documentaries and political based shows on the new BBC3 which would run 24 hours a day.

R.I.P

Ja'mie
Jonah
Family Guy (better on BBC3 tbh)
American Dad (better on BBC3 tbh)

Terrible move :worry:
