You have already stated that the incident occurred in a location which has no CCTV cameras and I believe that, had you just ignored this ignorant bastard and left the car where it was and walked away, you would have returned to find your car damaged - probably scratched by 'keying' or similar.
'Dragged up' bullying scum like this guy have no consideration for other people or other people's property. They have no regard or respect for the law and do not not know how to spell 'morals', let alone possess any, and I believe that you did absolutely the correct thing in the circumstances - even though you may now feel ashamed or angry at yourself for not 'standing up' to him.
You were in a 'no win' situation. You cannot reason with an ignorant man. You cannot appease a bully. You cannot even fight a man who has no sense of consequence because he has no taboos; every week in our cities, decent young people (usually students) are being knifed or beaten to death because they 'argued' with yob low-life's who were just out to cause trouble.
No, don't be hard on yourself, there was, in the circumstances, nothing you could have - lawfully - done. I say 'lawfully' because I assume that you are 'law abiding', and would not have entertained any of the more satisfactory options open to you. Like yielding, driving away, then returning to 'key' his parked car. Or yielding, driving away, then returning with 2 huge male friends with baseball bats.
No?.... I didn't think so. And this is just why you should not be hard on yourself. You cannot win with these vile scum-bags unless you're prepared to descend to their level. You cannot fight under the Marquess of Queensberry rules when the other guy can't read and is wielding a baseball bat.
Forget and move on - you're the bigger person.:wavey:
