Hello everybody :) thanks for making this thread Caitlin, it's lovely to come back to!

So yeah, my boy has been given the all clear.. They can't detect any leukaemia at all, even using the most sensitive, molecular testing. I can't even begin to explain how it felt to receive the good news... It was either going to be this or a bone marrow transplant which would have meant relocating again to Glasgow for the treatment, then 6 months at home with no visitors and no leaving the house.. Relieved is an understatement. Obviously, he'll be monitored closely for the next 5 years, but for now I can say my son kicked cancers arse.. hard!

We'll I've been smiling a lot.. Plus enjoying little things like going to my own toilet and using my own shower etc. Oh and I've been drinking champagne a LOT!!
The schools are in holiday here at the moment but the nurse that was here the other day said that she'll arrange a meeting at the school as soon as they go back and make plans for him to return a few hours a day at first.. He's still got his Hickman line in his chest and his feeding tube in his nose, so gym and playtime etc will be a nono at first, plus his immune system is still up and down so the teachers have to be told how to recognise the first signs of infection and to phone us immediately.. All a bit daunting really, but it's another step towards normality

Shaun 18-10-2014 11:24 PM

How much school has he missed? Has he had friends around for visits & stuff?

He's not been at school since 24th April and because he's spent most of his time in isolation in hospital, the only people he's really seen are me and his dad.. He FaceTimed his friends from hospital though, so they've seen him ill and bald and with lots of tubes and machines.. It's still going to be a big step getting back to normal school life though.

This will be the best Christmas ever! Can't actually wait.. I've kept a positive vision in my head this whole time of Samuel sitting at Xmas dinner with a wee party hat on, sitting laughing with us

....hawwww Lee, what an incredible little guy you have but then he has a pretty great family as well...he's going to be like a movie star when he goes back to school...I know it all seems a little daunting as he's more vulnerable and susceptible to viruses etc as his body adjusts back and the precautions that have to be taken with that but it's not actually so bad..we've had a few children over the years who have also had leukaemia and his school will let you know whenever there is some illness in school that you need to be aware of and he might need some anti-biotics for his low immunity etc sometimes...but it really is no time at all before these precautions don't have to be taken and he's no longer any more vulnerable than any other child...it's also amazing how children 'catch up' so quickly with stuff they have missed at school..his classmates and friends will think that his Hickman line is just about the coolest thing ever.....they'll all be fascinated by it because that's children...I'm so, so really happy for you and your whole family...when he's strong enough you all need to treat yourself to something to balance this awful time out...what a Christmas you'll all have, eh...that's if you're conscious of any of it in your wave of celebrations.....just the best news ever, Lee.....

Lee. 19-10-2014 11:46 AM

Thanks Ammi :) thankfully, he had a teacher for an hour a day whilst in hospital so he's hopefully not fallen behind that much.
They're going to do another bone marrow test in 2 months and if it's still clear, they'll remove his Hickman, so hopefully it'll be gone by Christmas! I just want him back to normal as quickly as possible.. His hair and eyelashes are back.. His hair is a different colour, but he looks like a healthy child now rather than a cancer patient!
