Detective drama Broadchurch has been commissioned for a second series, ITV has announced.

The "whodunnit" starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman will go into production next year but details of the cast are being tightly guarded.

The climax of the investigation into the death of 11-year-old Danny Latimer was watched on 22 April by a peak audience of 8.9 million viewers.

Writer Chris Chibnall said he was "gobsmacked" by the figures.

"There was another very different story we could tell afterwards. I'm really thrilled we're going to tell that story too," he said.

Set in the fictional seaside Dorset community of Broadchurch, the drama had bookmakers running odds on who they thought was responsible for the young boy's death.

ITV's director of television, Peter Fincham, said the channel was "delighted" to be commissioning the second series.

"From the moment the murder scene was discovered, viewers became gripped by the series, and we've been genuinely thrilled by the audience response," he said.

The series, produced by Kudos Film and Television, also starred Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Vicky McClure, Pauline Quirke and Matthew Gravelle.

Details of the cast and storyline for the follow-up have not been announced yet.

Watched the first 3 eps tonight, very very gripping and emotional.

I think it might be Becca or Pauline's character. So many suspects, even Beth's mum isnt sitting safe with me.

Jords 05-05-2013 05:42 AM

Spent the whole night watching the last 7 eps of this, absolutely fantastic. Caught on it was Joel but if it wasnt him it was gonna be Mark. Didnt expect that reasoning though, thought itd interlink with Tom and the money somehow.

Olivia :worship:
Felt so sad for her character, actually teared up.

Great show.

Olivia Colman has confirmed she is returning for the new series of Broadchurch.

Colman starred opposite David Tennant in the original eight-part series, which followed the hunt for the killer of an 11-year-old boy found dead on a Dorset beach. Broadchurch was a huge hit for ITV when it aired in March and April of this year, drawing a massive audience of over 10 million for its final episode in which the murderer's identity is revealed.

ITV has revealed that series two of Broadchurch will go into production next year (2014) but plot details are being kept under wraps. Asked at a press event yesterday (November 6) whether she will be back for the next batch of episodes, the the BBC reports, Colman replied: "I don't want to get myself in trouble but I think it's set in stone."

Colman also confirmed she is not reprising her role as DS Ellie Miller in the US remake of Broadchurch - although David Tennant is set to star again as DI Alec Hardy.
two bits of excellent news.

I caught this when it was airing on ITV Encore because I missed it the first time round. I put on my planner and I started watching an episode every few nights. I watched the last four episodes last night.

Absolutely incredible drama. The story was great and the cast were just phenomenal. Olivia was outstanding.

I suspected Ellie's husband quote early on but I dismissed it because he was the husband of the detective on the case. I did think it was him again after Ellie asked Susan 'how could she not know?'

Can't wait for series 2. I hope it's as great as the first series :worship:

I wonder what the story will be.

BigSister 06-08-2014 01:52 PM

Caught up with this on itv encore and like people have said great tv and was gutted I knew who the murderer was but I wouldn't have guessed first time round
Spoiler:

I think Ellie and Alec are returning along with Beth Mark and the vicar. Don't know about any other characters

The first glimpse of Broadchurch's forthcoming second series have been revealed.

The two unbranded coast line shots were aired during The X Factor on ITV last night (November 9). Both clips featured the phrase "The end is where it begins." There is no return date for the series, which will see David Tennant and Olivia Colman reprise their roles as detectives.

Colman starred opposite David Tennant in the original eight-part series, which followed the hunt for the killer of an 11-year-old boy found dead on a Dorset beach. Broadchurch was a huge hit for ITV when it aired in March and April 2013, drawing a massive audience of over 10 million for its final episode in which the murderer's identity is revealed.

Asked at a press event in November 2013 whether she will be back for the next batch of episodes, the BBC reports, Colman replied: "I don't want to get myself in trouble, but I think it's set in stone."

Colman did not, however, reprise her role as DS Ellie Miller in the US remake of Broadchurch – however, David Tennant does star in the US version which was retitled Gracepoint. The 10-episode series is currently airing on the Fox channel.
