"Free speech" isn't as simple as you seem to think it is.

Freedom of speech is very simple you can listen to someone or you can ignor them simple really.

I love the dancing around conker trees analogy, I am going to use that.

Or you can rip the sh*t out of them when they reveal their casual attitudes to Racism and sexism. I find this really winds them up.

There is a huge difference from freedom of speech and hate speech.

well said Josie

if Ken was just an old dinosaur, from an age when offensive words were more common, then he would have used the other N word, the word Negro was never a common term in this country, in fact as a child of the 70's the only time I ever heard it used was on a programme called Roots about an african slave in the USA, and the term was used by slave masters, you may also hear it in the deep south now, from the most ignorant, but it was never in use in this country

I believe he used that word to be controversial, but not the other N word because he didnt want to be kicked out in disgrace

My mum was 86 when she died and had early onset dementia and in all my life I never heard her use either word, so his age is really NO EXCUSE WHATSOEVER and does a great disservice to the rest of us who grew up hearing language like that and consigned it to the dustbin of history (in this country) long ago!

Whats ego got to do with anything? its about rights ,A friend of mine killed herself last year over freedom of speech or lack of it

I can only imagine the state of the world if blatant racism and bigotry was allowed to be freely preached from the rooftops, what a disastrous world that would be.

Its not about censoring opinion, if his opinion is that Alex is a negro, then he is allowed that opinion, but we are allowed to say, that's not acceptable on a prime time TV show anymore!!

No dear. Your definition of what free speech is, is uninformed and quite simply incorrect.

Because you were telling me how you think your opinions are more valid than most?

I couldn't care less about how highly you think of yourself, it's not relevant to the topic.

But it didn't happen, did you live in the 60s? did you see how people got on? there were no street gangs stabbing each other, black, white, asian kids all played together happily, no do gooders saying ,"You mustnt call him/her by that name "because no one did call each other racist names...the do gooders have brought all this race hate on

If there was never a problem back then, then why would anyone try to change it Chuff?

And most people (thankfully) make a choice to acknowledge that a person who comes out with blantent bigotry and racism and attempts to label it as 'free speech' is talking out of their arse.

Daniel. 12-01-2015 03:35 PM

Freedom of speech? Fair enough if it doesn't effect people, but with things such as homophobia, racism and sexism it's not free speech, it's degrading someone else and it absolutely should not be allowed, thankfully racism gets people in trouble these days as to air such an opinion is wrong.

This was 1955, close to 1960's...

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, a 42-year-old African American woman who worked as a seamstress, boarded this Montgomery City bus to go home from work. On this bus on that day, Rosa Parks initiated a new era in the American quest for freedom and equality.
She refused to stand up on a bus for a white person.

We have freedom of speech, offend all the minorities!

Northern Monkey 12-01-2015 03:36 PM

'Free speech' is a myth.It does not exist.Someone is always gonna tell you that you can't say something. The whole concept of free speech is flawed because you are not allowed to say anything that might upset anyone.I liked Ken,He was a breath of fresh air.Even though he was only doing it to get kicked out.He provided some light heartedness amonst all those uptight self obsessed egos in there but BB has rules and he broke them.I wish he was still in there but he did deliberately break the rules of the show so it was'nt unexpected.

You seem to have re-written history there. I dont recall this Utopia. I do recall my father telling me about how he was gonna kill this guy at work in the 60's cuz the guy had been winding him up all day. The concept of my mild mannered dad actually killing someone is something I cannot get my head around so this guy must have really wound him up get him in such a state. Your recollections are not what I remember or my family remember.

Liam- 12-01-2015 03:38 PM

Some people live life with rose tinted glasses, if they didn't see it happen, it couldn't have happened, that seems like the case here.

Either you have come from an alternate dimension or you dreamt this beautiful world with no conflict.

Because they thought they should ,for what reason i dont know, i can only speak from experience ,When i was small I lived on a 100% white street, black people and asian people were hardly over here then ...... then 2 black families moved in ,then an asian family EVERYONE got on with everyone ,why can't it be like that now? because people are sick of being told what they can say and not say ,my daughter was called white trash at school by a mixed race child ,when i complained i was told it wasn't racist !!
