Yes, he knew it left her with a chance of going. That doesn't mean he can't feel any sympathy when she does, they have to choose someone. He's never expressed a dislike of her or a strong wish to see her gone.

Expressing sympathy for her (more than she's due, by the way) contradicts nothing.
