it feeds the terrorists i think. It should just be factual reporting, nothing more

Oh yes I remember hearing this. Hopefully it is the truth and not fibs. But still doesn't bring much comfort as to what could happen.

Yup. It's essentially scaremongering and basically doing exactly what the terrorists want by causing the public to be panicked, scared, worried and so on.

I know people need to be aware of the dangers but the media completely wring any incidents completely dry just so they have something to broadcast.

I know but trading on death, it's so distasteful, not to mention the terrorists who must love every gory detail

Got to agree. I just heard a reporter talking over footage shot just after the explosion who described the people in the airport as "cowering in fear". Bet IS love that kind of lazy, sensationalist reporting. What I saw in that footage, in fact, was people taking cover and not panicking.

Shaun 22-03-2016 12:55 PM

I dunno if I follow the whole "playing into their hands" theory with regard to panicked eyewitness testimony - I don't know how many more terrorists are going to look at news footage and take it as direct inspiration. Like if you're already thinking "let's blow myself up for my cause" this is going to be a very minor factor if one at all. But I assume these weren't suicide bombings so maybe there's some validity, I don't know - I just think if you're going to bomb in the name of IS, or in protest against Abdeslam being incarcerated/other "western" acts that conflict with your worldview, a bunch of news footage isn't going to matter so much.

But I do agree there's too much "live" stuff in general from a taste level - I don't think there's much credibility in scrambling for the quickest mobile phone-caught footage available. I do wonder how much of it is just news corporations trying to compete against each other for exclusives rather than a legitimate interest in their own content.

News channels are just doing their job I think, its important to have rolling coverage of a situation like this because it is ongoing, its still not really clear how it happened and we have an ever rising death toll. Its also important to discuss whether security measures have been adequate, its quite well known that Belgian intelligence leaves a lot to be desired and that there's been problems with extremism in the country for a long time (not that its always going to be possible to prevent terror attacks whatever steps you take). The more information the better imo.

I have no problem with that kind if information being broadcast it is important to know if they have moved on from suicide bombers to leaving devices to be detonated remotely etc, what I find unnecessary is the stories about the victims their injuries, and basically the gory details that add nothing, a bit like slowing down to see a car crash, it doesn't help anyone

Yeah... I don't know how to take watching it "unfold live" ... just makes you feel helpless

I turned to the the Canadian Budget coverage instead... a different type of tragedy imo

From the DM

[The trio were apparently captured on CCTV in the minutes before 14 people died
and dozens more were maimed in the check-in area. Belgian media said the two men
on the left had blown themselves up and the third suspect, wearing a hat,
is believed to have left a nail bomb and fled

It's getting to the stage where this sort of thing isn't even shocking anymore. When will this ever end?
