Sounds familiar unfortunately. I would advise anyone who's looking to rent to insist on knowing the landlord and any landlord looking for tenants to know their tenants. Agents don't want you knowing each other because you may just find out that you are both being scammed.

Even though deposits are protected, when left in the hands of an agent, they may try and hold on to it. Its always a good idea to take photographs when you enter the property and again before you leave. Its the same with infantries. Both landlords and tenants need to scrutinize before signing and keep a copy for themselves.
