But that's making it the ad makers fault. Which it shouldn't be.

Because I daresay you could screenshot any advert/campaign/TV show/scene/artwork/cover and take it out of the context of its original presentation to make it look like something it isn't.

Again, I don't think people like that should be pandered to.

Well I don't either, which is why I said (in first post) that I would be fine with it if Dove had said that they expected certain people to try to twist the message, but that they believe in their positive message and wouldn't let internet loons dictate their actions.

My issue is with the idea that it never crossed their minds at all. It's just... BS. It did. It must have.

I think by that they obviously mean it didn't cross their minds in the creation of the ad (ie. it wasn't at all a part of their intention).

Whether they predicted loons would twist their message is neither here nor there really. Admitting "yeah, actually we thought someone might take it out of context and make it racist" wouldn't achieve much IMO.

So we go on with companies pretending to be surprised by things they aren't surprised by, and we pretend to believe that they are surprised, and then we pretend to be surprised when it turns out they weren't surprised at all, even though no one is surprised in the slightest by any of it.

I'm not playing :hmph:.

Or they just tell the crazies "Racism was not and is not the intention behind the campaign" which it clearly isn't and move on?

OK so we're getting there.

HOW did she know exactly what she was doing?

Because she knew that the imagery of a black woman changing to a white woman would set people off.

She saw the 3 second video, she thought "hey this would be easy to twist".

She knew that it would set off the internet.

Because it was really obvious it would and she knew it as soon as she saw the video.

Now, forgive me here, but this was a ****ing beauty vlogger, not an evil genius. A beauty vlogger saw the obvious twist exploit in this video. But the ad execs quality control didn't consider it for a second. Hmmmm. Dove are pretending to be shocked. Hmmmm. Everyone else is claiming that they have no idea how this has happened. HHHhhhmmmm.

Well darn, I guess everyone has been outsmarted. By a beauty vlogger. ... .... .......

I'm too tired to work out what you're on about lol. Ive only just came on and skimmed through the thread. But yes the vlogger knew that showing the screenshots of a black woman turn white would anger her fans and get her a couple shares and retweets.

Edit: I get the convo we're having now. I don't think dove saw this coming. Like the idea of screenshotting a three second vid instead of sharing it is a bit bizarre. Like that's not easier, the vlogger had a motive, and I don't think dove would assume that someone has a motive against them so hard, to the extent of misconstruing their advertisement with multiple screenshots.

people can derive connotations from anything if they have a mind to, and edit things to suit there agenda. The fact that they achieved their goal in stirring something up that didn't exist is more worrying
