There are plenty of treatments done on the NHS that aren't directly life saving or that are 'less important' than cancer treatments but we try and treat as many afflictions as possible if we have the means to do so. SRS improves quality of life, helps with depression, prevents self-mutilation, and lowers suicide rates, so I think it's a good thing.

Temporarily. Long term suicide rates are the same after SRS as beforehand. Which says to me that the underlying mental health issues (most trans people have at least 1 co-morbid mental health problem) need to be treat, rather than the body.

Which is another reason the government needs to sort out the mental health sector of the nhs which is so poorly managed and funded.

That's really interesting (and surprising tbh I didn't know that). I'd say that any other mental health problems would also need to be treated but not as an 'instead of'. If the rates are improved temporarily but then end up the same later on it suggests to me that there is a benefit to SRS and perhaps the answer is to improve long term aftercare.

Indeed. Funding for mental health is being cut left right and centre, when we need it most too.

Its never really been considered an important issue by the government it seems, and now they are trying to remove the little thats left. If they invested in it it would remove a lot of demand for other nhs services and help so many people. ******* i'm so angry about this #angrygrumpygit
