I was never made to feel I was in "constant repression". Being straight is seen as normal because almost everyone is straight, and most boys and girls have interests which match their gender. Some girls like boy things, some boys like girl things. It's not seen as much of a big deal these days, just like being LGBT isn't.
When I came out, nothing changed apart from the gender which people said I might break the hearts of, or make a great partner for.
