I really didn’t think much of Billy Porter from AHS but he’s incredible in this

Jake. 23-01-2021 11:45 PM

Costas :(

Yeah. :bawling:

I thought it couldn't get much worse [upsetting] than that/the hospital scenes... I was wrong.

Jake. 24-01-2021 12:41 AM

Not prepared!

Yeah he's great.

I will say my one main gripe with the show - and it's not his fault, and I don't want to discredit his performance - is that it's a pretty cruel ****ing irony that in a show about the ball scene, and predominantly created and centred around trans women, absolutely none of the trans actors are regularly submitted or even nominated for major awards (I'm sure MJ Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson, etc. have won smaller awards, but I'm talking the Emmys and Golden Globes here).

Because whilst I'm moved by Porter at times, I think the star of the show is MJ Rodriguez, hands down. Greatness from Indya Moore, Dominique, Angelica Ross, and guest appearances like Peppermint and Trace Lysette, as well)

...it strange, someone just mentioned Pose on my wall...that they missed it...it really is a series that has the characters become such a part of you that there should be a category is therapy group to get you through the first few days...it’s so uplifting because of the sense of family but obviously, heartbreaking as well because of the time it’s set in and the rejections the characters have gone through and continue to go through in their lives...this with Big Little Lies would have some of my all time favourite characters in them...I love Pray Tell and I absolutely adore Blanca and Elektra, they’re so totally different...and yet, somehow they’re not so different , either...I feel envious, Jake...that you’re watching this for the first time...the journey is emotional but it’s also beautiful, filled with the most incredible people.....

Jake. 25-01-2021 09:43 PM

I just finished the penultimate episode of S2 and it definitely follows the typical Ryan Murphy tropes at times

That scene between Blanca and Frederica in the nail salon could have been pulled straight out of The Politician or AHS Coven

Still love it though

Shaun 26-01-2021 02:25 AM

I last watched the episode where Frederica randomly turns on Blanca and boards up the salon just after spending time at her AIDS cabaret and it's just... why? It doesn't make any sense, other than "we've paid Patti LuPone to sing, ****, just hope they don't notice her lack of character direction". Such a poor addition to the cast, similar to how that blond AHS twink and his marriage was irrelevant and irritating during S1.

I can understand the "business discrimination" angle for a plotline, but to just dangle it to a celebrity cameo that doesn't really sell the role well in amongst her random theatricality is just Murphyism at its finest.

LaLaLand 26-01-2021 04:31 AM

IIRC Frederica is basically just a nod to Leona Helmsley, or “The Queen of Mean” as she was known.

Finished season 2 and the last ep was perfect. Sad, heartwarming and joyous

I’m very intrigued about when S3 will take place.

Will it be immediately following the end of S2 or will it be a bit later like we saw between 1 & 2 (late 80’s - early 90’s), when those “new kids” are fully integrated into house? And how will the diagnosed characters fare.

This is the main thing I’m potentially dreading :worry:

I read somewhere It’ll be based in 1994, and one of big plot arch’s will be Blanca as she finds love and has to mother her new children at the same time.

Right? Like, are some main cast going to be deceased by the time S3 takes place?? I haven't heard of anyone not returning that shouldn't be though...

Ah really! So that's a 3 year jump from the end of S2 (May '91)... Worried. :bawling:

Spoiler:

How many are HIV+ at the end of S2?

Blanca (has progressed to AIDS), Pray and Ricky..? Have I missed anyone?

Smithy 05-02-2021 04:21 PM

Right I’m posting blind in her and not reading anything yall have said bc I’ve only just finished S1

I loved everything about it, it was funny, heartwarming, touching, emotional, incredible, amazing, never been done before etc etc

BUT my one issue with the show is that, the actress for Electra... just isn’t very good? When she’s being fierce she’s perfect, but did anyone else just find that when she had emotional scenes, like in the hospital with Blanca, or when she was apologising to her children, it’s just came across as really wooden? :(

Shaun 05-02-2021 06:04 PM

I think it's more the character than anything else, she's uncomfortable with displaying emotion and is incredibly cold and distant (because of the rejection she's experienced, presumably).

She has some great scenes and displays a lot of emotional versatility in S2... I can't remember her being particularly wooden in S1 but I do remember finding the character bizarre at times in her motivations (complete changes of mood and pleasantry in relationships with Blanca, other characters)

Ammi 06-02-2021 02:31 PM

...yeah as Shaun said, I would say that Dominique played Elektra’s character to be someone who has very guarded and uneasy emotions due to past life and past hurts...I read that she suffered depression when she was playing Elektra because of Elektra’s ‘fierceness’ ....and worried that she might be much hated/seen as that fierce person herself /confused with the character...

...although I completely adore Blanca, Elektra for me is probably the most complicated one because of her extreme vulnerabilities as well...that determination and need to be her true self, regardless of any personal cost...and not because of her lifestyle etc...but because she obviously did invest huge emotions as well and in reality was often quite hopeless in revealing and laying open those emotions...

Smithy 28-02-2021 06:15 PM

Just finished S2, I think Electra was a lot better but I also think she played less of a part and her storylines were almost the comedic relief of the season - I SCREAMED when she yelped at the graduation party when Damen and Pray were arguing

Also BAWLED for like 90% of Candy’s funeral, I wasn’t *that* keen on her character beforehand, but her talking to everyone saying she was free etc just had me sobbing :bawling:

Very happy that Blanca didn’t die in the finale, at the start of the ep I thought that was what was going to happen :worry:

Smithy 05-03-2021 02:09 PM

The 3rd (and final) season starts May 2

LaLaLand 05-03-2021 02:53 PM

Gutted it’ll be the last but it was inevitable.

Bring it on! Think it’ll be going out with a bang.

Season 3 trailer:

Quote:

Set to the tune of Aretha Franklin’s “A Deeper Love”, the season 3 trailer gives fans an exciting glimpse of what’s to come – including a possible wedding for Papi (Angel Bismark Curiel) and Angel (Indya Moore).

The third season jumps ahead to 1994, with Blanca (Mj Rodriguez) reflecting on the incredible progress her family has made over the years.

Meanwhile Pray Tell (played by Billy Porter) is looking towards an uncertain future and reflecting on his legacy as he grapples with HIV.

“I knew this disease would eat me alive, but I’m not going out without a fight,” he vows.

With the AIDS crisis intensifying, Blanca is now working shifts as a nurse in a hospital – but that doesn’t mean she’s left the ballroom behind.

“It’s about our legacy,” she declares while sat around a table, trying to convince her family to return to the ballroom scene. “We rose from the bottom and we became stars. When we walk together we make a statement.”
