Nobody has defended anything, that's your imagination running wild.

They’d find a way to try and justify it still. You’d be flabbergasted with these people.

Of course it is

People have given their opinion on what they saw on a video that was posted. Nobody has defended anything.

I'm not disputing the fact that people have given their opinions on the video. Like, obviously they have.

But there's two groups of posters in the thread - a) those who see it as blatant racism and b) those who do not, therefore defending the man/men in question.

I have watched the video...it’s apparent that the guy imitating a monkey had done it previously prompting the man with the phone to call him and do it again. When he called them they turned as though they didn’t know he was there imo..but I could be wrong. The idiot then granted the guys wishes and imitated a monkey for him to video. The idiot was clearly drunk because it’s a pathetic thing to do for whatever reason...it could have been racially motivated..it could have been just a stupid piss head larking around...
If the guy filming was being racially antagonised why would he encourage him to do it again and film him...it proves nothing unless it’s off the cuff.

It could be blatant racism...it could be just drunken stupidity..

Why can't it be both???

It proves that he did indeed do it because the guy knew what he was talking about and then did it again. And he wanted him to do it again to get proof of it on camera which I think is fine.

It's a bit debatable whether the guy originally did it with racist intentions because sure he maybe could've just been drunk and randomly making monkey noises. However, when asked to do it again, the way he comes at the black guy while making the noises looks VERY patronizing/belittling/flat out racist so... it seems pretty racist

You all need to get off your soap boxes and come down to Earth.

I do a great monkey impression but i have respect for another person regardless of race, not all because there are bad humans in all races and I’m not a hypocrite.

Look past the title and the group of men are not in this guys face, it’s the guy with the camera that has an issue not the other way round.

It’s easy to make a knee jerk reaction, but it’s not being racist to question the facts.

Oliver_W 11-03-2019 06:37 AM

I don't get how it's being branded as "blatant racism", the video makes it impossible to know for sure, especially as like Rusticgal said, it seemed like they didn't know he was there until he shouted.

Beso 11-03-2019 06:52 AM

I think the voice of the female passenger helps prove this is a racist dick.

In the sensible conclusion

bots 11-03-2019 07:59 AM

i think the guy filming wanted to be offended and wanted something to share on social media. Please perform for me so I can say I was racially abused.

The reason I take that view is that the guy clowning around was nowhere near him so he couldn't possibly have been abusing him at the start. Call the guy a drunken idiot, fine ... that is much more accurate than trying to say it is an instance of racial abuse.

It can’t be racism because people simply aren’t racist xd

Some posters are shocked to the knee jerk reaction to some of their comments. We can have a discussion and bring nuance to something like this but that’s hard when it’s the same like 3 posters that’s first reaction is to try and defend racism to like anything in the same bait-ey fashion.

Indeed.

I do wish the video started earlier because the context is actually completely missing and no... doing an animal impression isn't racist "at all times", only if it's clearly directed at someone for that reason. To suggest that any monkey impression is inherently racist is a bit much.

However I agree with Parm; the claim does gain a bit of validity because there are other voices on the recording that indicate the guys were taking the piss / being racist, and it doesn't sound like they were with the guy recording, just another random passenger.

I think the damage that Smollet has done is pretty clear immediately when things like this happen now because that WAS my immediate thought; not to disbelieve the video, but to wish there was more context because as things stand ... it is perfectly feasible that they were just idiots who were talked into doing monkey impressions deliberately to film it in a (successful) attempt to go viral.

Like I said above, the ONLY thing that makes me think it may well be a real incident of racism is that another passenger clearly believes so as well when the video starts, so it might have been clear what their intent was before the camera started rolling on them. But like I said I wish there was more context. Because the Smollet incident HAS demonstrated that a wait-and-see approach is sensible. But I'm not sure that's a good thing... to be less trusting of things like this.

I think I responded too soon.

Now i have actually watched the video there is nothing to actually suggest he was being racist.
All we saw were a group of lads stood there. The lad in the blue top had presumably been doing the monkey impression before the vid started rolling and had stopped.

Then the ‘victim’ asks him to do it again for his social media. So he does.

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest it was meant to be racist.
It could have been but it just as easily could not have been.
Without seeing what happened before nobody knows.

Tom4784 11-03-2019 01:56 PM

I hate that people think that saying the words 'Jussie Smollett' is some kind of magical spell to banish claims of racism.

Says it all, really.

Making monkey gestures to a black person only ever has one meaning.
