Palpatine coming back was BS, it basically pissed in the face of everything the six films were trying to achieve.

And why is Force healing suddenly a thing? Anakin basically killed his wife and a bunch of kids, and condemned himself to spend the rest of his life limbless and in a robot suit so he could help Padme ... but suddenly Rey and Ken can just do it? Buuulllthsssiiit

Calderyon 22-12-2019 09:27 PM

Have watched less than 30 minutes now.

LukeB 23-12-2019 08:55 PM

This was great! Not as bad as the critics say and it’s not the worst star wars film some are saying. It was great watching it in 4DX as well.

My only complaint would be that they crammed a lot of stuff in without giving much explanation but I blame that on TLJ for having a pointless plot that stalled the storytelling.

Oliver_W 24-12-2019 03:59 PM

I watched it again (sailing the high seas this time) and I liked it even less :(

Spoiler:

The entire film seems to be made to insult Anakin. He threw away his entire life and became Darth Vader trying to find a way to save Padme, but apparently there's a Force power any Tom, Dick, or Debbie Harry can do to heal wounds and bring people back from (near/) death? Rey and Ken are nowhere near as well trained as Anakin was at the time, so why can they both do it? Why couldn't Obi Wan do it to Qui Gon?
From the Mandalorian series...
Spoiler:

I know Baby Yoda can do it, but his entire species is OP when it comes to the Force

Palpatine being back is BS, and again it pisses in Anakin's eye. He sacrificed his life and rejoined the Light Side to kill him, but it was all for nothing? Why is he more dead when Rey killed him than Anakin?

The Leia stuff was so distracting. You could tell she was "not there", and the lines were recorded and the rest of the stuff was written around it. Plus it didn't feel like her. Even when she was elderly she was dynamic and active, while here she was just standing there. It was so obvious when she was being played by a body double. The character should have been elsewhere in the Galaxy, communicating via hologram, so she could be CGI and a soundalike. The blue wavy lines means it doesn't need to be 100% convincing.

Rey stealing Luke and Anakin's name didn't sit well with me. All of the original characters are dead, the Jedi order is over, and the name is taken by a Palpatine? How is that a victory?

What was with the new pointless characters clogging up an already cluttered film? Bobby Fetta at least served a purpose when she gave Poe the magic coin, and Afro introduced us to the runaway stormtrooper colony, but still...

Why didn't you use the spoiler tabs?

Actually, you're right - I myself can read pretty quickly, and it sometimes "processes" at a glance, so I agree that one line isn't enough, and someone could easily see something they don't want to before watching the movie :)

Finally watched this tonight and it was awesome! Best of the sequel trilogy for me.

James 05-05-2020 12:10 AM

I watched it again on TV.

There is a lot is entertaining up to a point, but it is mainly the final battle and scenes that let it down. They could have come up with something better than that.

Spoiler:

Palpatine does the same, there's no hope, no-one is coming speech as in Return of the Jedi.

The new force healing power didn't seem to make sense to me.

Spoiler:

Rey heals Kylo and she is fine, but Kylo/Ben heals Rey at the end, and he dies.

They should have stuck with Rose, and given her a bigger role, rather than introducing the new characters, cause it definitely looked like as snub.

I liked some of it though.

I don't think any of the new Star Wars films have actually worked all the way through.

user104658 05-05-2020 08:44 AM

The worst part will forever be
Spoiler:

The needless, incesty-feeling kiss at the end. Their connection should have been written as something "unexplainable" and force-related... Making it a romantic connection was dumb, cheap and made no sense.

Literally wrecked the whole film.

Worse than Jar Jar or the time that Anakin's chat up game involved telling Padme about getting sand in his arse crack.

James 05-05-2020 08:57 AM

Oh yeah, it was weird also how
Spoiler:

Luke and Leia knew all along who Rey was

MTVN 06-05-2020 05:41 PM

I finally saw this last night and it was pretty entertaining but there was quite a lot I didn't like

Spoiler:

I can't get on board with this whole idea of physical objects being able to be passed through the force. It made it kinda annoying that Kylo could then instantly tell where Rey was so whenever she went anywhere he would just pop up ten minutes later

Rey was pretty inconsiderate of her friends really. How many times did she just ditch them unexplained to go off on her own adventure putting them at big risk

The inability of people to die was a bit annoying. If Rey actually had killed Chewie that could have been a really good plot development rather than there happening to have been two massive ships that were able to land and leave again right by Rey and Co without them noticing. Also you feel kinda sad for Poes friend who sacrificed her chance of leaving the planet by giving him the Captains badge until it turns out she somehow managed to leave the planet anyway before it was blown up

Having another blow up planets device was itself a bit dull

Why make Kylo and Rey's thing romantic just as he dies

Like Oliver said it makes a mockery of the fact Anakins whole motivation for joining the Sith was to save Padme as bringing someone back to life was meant to be a near impossible power that was only possible through the Sith

The Knights of Ren were a cool concept but never actually did anything

Why did Rey have to be a Skywalker. I thought she might want to reclaim the name Palpatine given that her parents were also Palpatines who sacrificed themselves for her

Overall I just didn't like how this film like the other two new ones relied so much on nostalgia for the OT and trying to recreate those. For all their faults I will always like the prequels for their ambition and originality

But I did like the space fights and the glimpses of different planets we got and I think Poe is pretty cool

user104658 06-05-2020 05:56 PM

Regarding the resurrection, I believe that was down to the whole "force twin" thing (supposed to be like once-in-a-thousand-years sort of rare) and that was the only reason it was possible.

This may also apply to other powers that they shared, like passing physical objects.

Tom4784 07-05-2020 12:38 PM

I watched it on Monday, it was dreadful and utterly amateurish and the way they implemented Carrie Fisher was just disrespectful. They should have had more faith in their original direction since it's obvious they likely threw out their original plan for the third film in the trilogy when fans got pissy that women existed in The Last Jedi.

The sad attempts at fanservice moments were utterly cringeworthy too. It's just... remarkable how bad this film was.

Still stand by this. :idc:

Tom4784 07-05-2020 12:42 PM

The Force Awakens is the best film by far in the trilogy, TLJ was a decent 7/10 but I feel like it's been made retroactively worse by this film given that TLJ was basically bridge between the first and last films and the payoff in the last film just wasn't worth it.

Tony Montana 07-05-2020 12:43 PM

If I were to rank all the SW films, it'd go:

1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. Revenge of the Sith
4. Return of the Jedi
5. Rogue One
6. The Rise of Skywalker
7. The Force Awakens
8. The Last Jedi
9. Attack of the Clones
10. The Phantom Menace

Haven't seen Solo.

:joker: :joker: I had forgotten about the "Bethesda style" generic dialogue scenes with Carrie Fisher!! I watched it in a mostly empty cinema with maybe 6 or 7 other people in the whole place - and I audibly laughed out loud. Really one of the best parts of the movie in terms of pure entertainment. I can't believe it got past quality control, I can only assume they were like "Oh god this is awful but we've already committed to it..."

Oliver_W 07-05-2020 05:10 PM

The Carrie Fisher stuff was borderline creepy.

It didn't even feel like Leia. I don't know how much sense this'll make, but Leia never just "stands and talks". She was always interacting with her surroundings and the other people in the scene.

Her death wasn't even explained. She's not old enough to die of old age without having been ill, and unless I've forgotten something she wasn't meant to be sick or anything?

The way the character told Rey "sorry, she's gone" sounded as if she'd just gone to another planet or something.

Is there any need for that? Admiral Holdo and Finn's woman were just crappy characters, their gender didn't come into it. People didn't care that Rey was female, they cared that her powers were accelerating faster than they should be as established in previous films. You can blame their gender if you like, but there's more substance to it. Everyone loves Leia, everyone likes Padme.

At the end of the day, would those same fans have hated Rose and Holdo if they were male characters? It would be disingenuous to say they would have been. At most, they would have been treated as forgettable, certainly not hated enough to completely bully the actors that would have played them.

Don't forget that fan edit of the film that cut out female characters, that was downloaded a ridiculous amount of times. I remember the outcry about that film, to pretend that it wasn't about the female focus is just not true.

Geek culture is filled with such misogyny, I should know because I'm into all the geeky ****. It's the same crowd that gets upset whenever there's a gay person in a video game or a female character that isn't dressed up in an armoured bikini. Thesde people see such things as 'political' and act like politics shouldn't have a role in the things they love as they read and watch Game of Thrones, read, play and watch the Witcher, play their Call of Duties, Metal Gear Solid and JRPGs that end with the main characters overthrowing governments and religions and killing God itself.

They always call it politics and it's always bull****.

Oliver_W 07-05-2020 06:34 PM

Eh, I tend to judge others by my own standards; my engagement with "online fandom" is pretty limited.

James 07-05-2020 11:08 PM

They should have gone forward with the new characters only in the new films.

That would have saved the complaints of Luke acting out of character in Last Jedi, which weren't unreasonable because his story was supposed to have finished in Return of the Jedi.

However Disney wanted the nostalgia boost - Force Awakens to make 2 billion dollars instead of 1 billion, and no-one complained at the time about the originals coming back.

Oliver_W 08-05-2020 08:35 AM

I kind of think the opposite - Ep 7 should have been a "last hurrah" for the old cast. They should have all been there and been together, while introducing the new characters to the "world" of the Jedi and the Rebellion. During the story the various batons - Luke and Anakin's sabre, the Falcon, the Droids - should have been passed on,before either some heroic sacrifices or just something which lets the old characters step back and let the new ones carry on the trilogy.

Actually I'm gonna come back on this a bit
Do you think people would be defending the characters if they were male?

Jake Lloyd's childhood was basically ruined by the backlash from his appearance in Phantom Menace, and I don't think that's ever talked about. Same with Jar Jar's actor, Ahmed Best, he actually considered suicide over the online abuse he was facing, and no-one said he should be left alone either.

Nicky91 19-05-2020 01:43 PM

had seen this on Sunday for first time

overall i had quite liked it, really liked the battle scenes myself

must also say Warning spoiler-heavy
Spoiler:

i really liked how they had ended Leia's storyline i mean it was a must due to Carrie's passing irl, but at least her death having made some sense to distract Kylo enough for Rey to stab him, also her curing him and that small cameo of Han Solo's ghost also made sense to make him Ben Solo again, and no longer Kylo Ren, i liked that part in the movie

but my overall score would be 9.0/10

side note, Billy Dee Williams looks still quite good despite his age of 83
