Agreed, I think he's taken at face value when what he's getting at is rarely that.

That comes with pitfalls from both sides; one that will think he's just being hateful and hate him from it, and another that will think he's just being hateful and celebrate him for it. Chappelle to his credit hasn't gone down the route of leaning into and actively pandering to those people like some other high profile examples (Jordan Peterson would be exhibit A for me).

This is a problem too of course - too many people making assessments based on 30 second TikTok clips rather than an hour long show in context.

It happens with youtube title videos aswell , people get outraged ...before actually watching the video they're supposedly upset about :rolleyes:. It's like people automatically wait to be offended now .

The thing about Gervais special was the stuff he was saying was all things that TRA's on Social Media say, the "HER PENIS" stuff etc.

I like Ricky Gervais and find him funny, not every one of his jokes, some are too far (for me) but surely that's always going to be the case with comedy, we all have the power to switch it off if we're not enjoying it anymore :shrug:

So then, I turned into Qanon Alf - and did my own research :smug: I looked through a few different articles and stuff about this, and I found this link to have actually researched and looked at the actual facts/data of the whole event.

I'm not saying this is the absolute definitive way this played out, and if you find information that completely disproves what this person says, then I'm open to reading that, too.

In the interests of good faith, I'm going to make a concession, not particularly about this story, but a general one. I've always been a skeptic when it came to twitter mobs and their existence, but I'm pretty confident in saying that they are a very real and frightening thing for many people, and just because I don't see them, it doesn't mean they don't exist. As an extremely wise man once wrote - we all have blind spots :smug:

For the last couple of years the YouTube comment section has been best ignored entirely, it's a complete dumpster fire ... I think half of the comments are bots as well (again, AI robots ... not the TiBB member, he doesn't have time).

Youtube titles have gotten very annoying. I especially hate these ones :

-insert youtuber name- DESTROYS feminist/Woke Student etc etc
Customer is rude to waitress and you won't BELIEVE what happens next

i've seen death threats made to content owners on youtube, and not on subjects that anyone could find offensive in any way. That doesn't strike me as normal

It's not that all of the commentary was bad, I think the one you mention was especially apt, pointing out the inherent irony of that line of ... resistence? "Stop saying offensive things you TERF wh ore!!" etc. ... you see this sort of thing on Twitter constantly.

It's something that's plagued TiBB from time to time as well. But doesn't it just unfortunately sum up the impasse of social media discourse in general. "Stop saying things that I find offensive, you disgusting piece of ****!"

My wife's had a threat of violence or two over peer-reviewed research that's been through multiple layers of University ethics :joker:. People are wonderful creatures.

The blog researches the hate, and found out that she received only a few comments at all, and they were mainly positive, so there was, based on the evidence, absolutely no mob at all.

How can you say 'no mob at all ' , when you know what a cess pit twitter and other social media platforms can be .

The guy trawled through her Sm pages and most of her comments were positive, he even checked her page on redditt, and the comments there were also mostly positive.

Her lifelong friends said that she was struggling with serious mental health issues and had recently had a child removed from them. It's a tragic story, but I think that DC may have (I'm being kind) overplayed the abuse, but like I say, and I mean this, if you find something to counter that, that shows this guy was the biased one who lied, then I'm open to looking at the facts.

Its watchable but nit that funny. The first season anyway, I didn't continue with it. Simon and Jay are literally just Simon and Jay selling double glazing. Exactly the same characters.

I'll give it a try then. As a connoisseur of the British sitcom, I'm desperate for something new that is watchable. It's extremely rare to find one these days.

Not British, but did you ever watch parks and rec? Seems like something that you wouldn't have wanted to watch, but you should give it a try if you didn't.

It has a good rating of 8.6 on Imdb. But for some reason I just can't do American sitcoms. I could when I was younger. I grew up watching The Munsters, The Golden Girls and Married with children and others. But having delved into the Golden age of British sitcoms, the American stuff just doesn't do it for me now, infact I stopped trying years ago.
