I was never fully aware of any of their problems or issues, but behind the scenes/ in their personal lives ... there can be so much going on.

He definitely envied the others. He release flop after flop. He went to see Niall in concert and was doing a weird unauthorised meet and greet with his fans outside the venue. Security had to tell him to stop. Compare that to Harry Styles who also went to support Niall but chose to do so in a private room as to not try to steal his thunder so to speak.
