Do I have to go to a Drama School?

You would be extremely lucky if you ever made it without Drama school, or at the least a drama uni. I personally am going to a Drama school attached to London University as I cant afford drama school that isnt attached to a uni, you cant get a student loan for it. But when I have finished uni, if I dont get scouted straight away I plan on going to Drama school.
Actors on films are just lucky, I wouldnt reccomend a career as a tv or film star, its highly unlikely you wont get a job, but a theatre job isnt too difficult. In fact to add to that, a hell of alot of tv stars are scouted from theatres, theatre is the shortcut to getting on TV haha.

I was thinking on becoming a theatre actor and then work my way up.

Yep well thats the way you should go, what I recommend for you before you go to college is get into some theatre groups and get involved. Get lots of experience on the stage, because there can be a chance that the college wont accept you if your just choosing it for the fun of it.
But its a great career choice, but seriously competitive, you dont just get a job in this industry. The only people who do get jobs are the people who dedicate their whole lives too it, im willing to drop everything and everyone to make it. And I full on understand that I could spend time sleeping in cars or something, its not a lovely career. But when you make it, it can be. If you want a life... I consider getting a 9 to 5 job rather than a career in the theatre lol.
