As promised something else a bit different - My Solaris 10 desktop from my Sun Ultra 5

http://img460.imageshack.us/img460/5...shotsc4.th.jpg

For those people that like to use free software you can download Solaris 10 for the PC for free from www.sun.com. It comes with bundled with Star Office 7.

Solaris isn't Linux but a full featured version of Unix with a desktop based around Gnome.

easypeasy 05-02-2007 03:43 PM

Ah so its sun as in the "sun java" people?

easypeasy 05-02-2007 03:48 PM

Didnt know they were so involved in unix, i kind of thought java was not the best basis for an OS because there a lot of Java based worms and stuff out there.
Im guessing it must be pretty secure though as its unix.

Red Moon 05-02-2007 06:29 PM

Sun Microsystems, the java people have been making Unix based workstations since computers since 1982. They are the sort of machines you would find in University's or large companies for doing research. In addition to this they also make Unix based enterprise and web-servers. Java is just a spin off from the building and supplying of machines. More recently they have become big in the open source world and the core code of open office comes from Star Office developed by Sun. For a number of years it has been offering their Solaris Operating system in x86 port for PC users.

Give you an idea of cost the list price of mine when it was new but it would have been about £3,500. It was the top of the range model of the Ultra 5 series of machines and one of the last produced. It even has a AMD coprocessor card that allows it to run windows 2000 in a window on the screen.

I got from ebay for next to nothing, upgraded the hard disk and installed the latest operating system. It is still a capable machine and great for internet use despite it relatively slow processor compared to a new PC's. One good thing is the 400MHz processor is 64-bit which speeds it all up and the kennel of the operating system has the fastest TCP/IP stack of ant operating system.

Just found out the 30 pound computer (including postage and packing) that produced the screen shot above cost $18,500 plus when new. That's a loss of about $18,440 in five years.

Moral of the story don't by a UNIX workstation new.... wait until the price drops.

Red Moon 01-04-2007 10:47 AM

Another screen shot of the SUN Ultra 60. This time it is running Solaris 8 and Microsoft Windows 2000 is nicely contained in a window.

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/2342/testtn5.th.jpg

This is possible because the SUN Ultra 60 has inside it a a PC on a plug in card that shares the display, hard disk, keyboard and mouse with the SUN.
