Using a proxy is a waste of time, you still have to connect through your router and ISP server. so data flow is monitored.

If you wanted to get round the monitoring and get caught it will invalidate your contract, plus your line details go onto a blacklist circulated between ISP's.

I seems patently obvious that even if using a proxy for whatever reason, you are still going through your ISP, even if your IP number is masked.

Edit: PS. if I was going to go over limit on a regular basis, I'd rather pay them the extra Fiver!

My desktop just froze and this is the third time since Thursday that this has happened. But everything else works perfectly including the task bar. What can I do to prevent this from happening again?

If a restore doesnt help, try Malwarebytes, just incase theres anything nasty lurking, update it first though.

SoBig 22-09-2010 12:10 PM

I'll try that thanks.

Smithy 23-09-2010 08:34 PM

Shasown 23-09-2010 08:42 PM

What exactly do you mean by your desktop froze, do you mean an animated wallpaper on your screen, or the icons(shotcuts) didnt work when you click them?

They didn't work when I clicked them. They didn't highlight or anything. The same thing happened to the background.

Ok if you have tried running a scan for malware and its came up clean:

What browser do you use?

Does the problem occur before you open your browser or only after you have opened it?

Is it all icons or only some, if its some is it ones you havent used in a while?

Did you instal or upgrade anything just prior to this problem occuring?

Or have you run any optimizer programs recently and this is one of the results?

setanta 23-09-2010 10:48 PM

I hate people like you Terry lol. Who bloody know what they're talking about when it concerns computers. Haven't got a fecking clue myself.

I'm not sure. The last time it happened I opened up Windows IE by accident.

No.

SoBig 24-09-2010 12:59 AM

Okay I just opened up Windows IE and guess what happened? My desktop is now frozen. So its definitely the IE browser that's causing the problem.

Smithy 24-09-2010 10:35 AM

Change to Opera

IE has caused me many problems in the past so I just disable it on all my computers.
Never try to delete it because it can damage your system.

I recommend you disable IE after you have downloaded an alternative browser so you can't open it accidentally.

You do this by Clicking on Start > Default Programs > Set Program Access And Computer Defaults > Click on Custom > Scroll down to Default Browser and next to Internet Explorer uncheck the box that says enable access to this program.

That will prevent you opening it by accident. :)

If you don't have an alternative browser then I recommend Google Chrome or Opera

If you want to turn on windows update then go to
Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Windows update. :)

Hmm it's probably a problem with DS itself, that site gets so much traffic every day I'm not surprised.

What happens when it freezes? Does your browser stop responding?

SoBig 26-09-2010 09:56 AM

My computer just froze again, but this time nothing was working. Not even the mouse.

I didn't open IE this time either.

Did you scan it with malwarebytes?

You could try a system restore, and restore it to before you installed the Ashampoo program.

Yes,I have to start the task manager to close it,it has done it on a couple of sites.

Yeah, I did and the only thing that showed up was "dealio toolbar" or something like that.

I tried to do a system restore, but it said that I didn't have any restore points.

Josy 26-09-2010 11:15 AM

I would remove the AShampoo program.(if you havent already done it).

Does it still freeze up when you load it up in safe mode?

Try running ccleaner.
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

You could also try the Last Known Good Configuration feature but that cant be undone, thats why I suggested system restore first.

Raph 26-09-2010 11:17 AM

How do you change the album artwork on Itunes?

Have you carried out a full scan for malware, using something decent such as malwarebytes or Trend housecall as the increase in your computers problems would indicate the presence and actions of malware?

If you have what browsers do you use? Because some browsers actually IE thats one reason why you have to keep it intact. Also what operating system are you using and how old is the computer with problems?

Highlight the song in your library or playlist. Go to file>Get info. Select the artwork tab.

If you cant click the delete button, click on the picture and then click it, select add and choose the picture you want.

I haven't uninstalled the ashampoo programs, because I thought the problem was solved by disabling IE.

No.

I tried ccleaner already.

I'll try that.

Yeah, there is no malware on the computer.

Firefox. IE is still on the computer, but disabled.

Windows 7 and I bought it back in July. The freezing only started last week.

SoBig 26-09-2010 12:01 PM

Maybe I should try to reinstall IE, to see if that will work?

You're issue could have one of a number of solutions. Try a one stop tune up application like.

Advanced system care

or

Glary Utility

These will do a number of system clean up functions.

Google and pandora toolbars were causing the problems. I have no idea how they got onto the computer.

I never install toolbars.

It seems a bit puzzling though that an innocuous toolbar could cause so many problems. Do you know how they were causing the problem?

Jessica. 30-09-2010 03:20 PM

Sorry I haven't been answering much questions recently.

Does anyone know, like you know when your internet first turns on, is there a way you can stop it signing onto MSN straight away without you even doing anything?

Niamh. 01-10-2010 03:12 PM

on mine it pops up asking me to sign in but it's not already signed in, shouldn't be if you logged out last time
