The mid season finale is on tonight not sure how far behind FX are though

It's cause the old patriarch guy believed they were sick. That being a zombie could be cured, so he seen them as the people he knew from before. And I guess he wanted to keep them safe till a cure was found.

I think FX is only 5 or 6 days behind (maybe I'm wrong), I usually download it after it airs in the states and watch it a few days later.
