Yes, although this Prank was YouTube, TV and World radio. Newspapers are not at fault they are just reporting news |
Except that the newspapers are at fault - this didn't need to be a news story, it could have easily just been kept to the listeners of that Australian radio station, but instead they made it a huge scandal.

It Went Viral on Youtube then World TV news and Radio So the papers - all of them had to report it. The DJ's are at fault |
The fault was with the hospital
The had no trained receptionist on to screen the initial call. |

why are we discussing this? why is this news? no one is privy to the motives of the woman's suicide, and aside from some royal~element~ i fail to see how it's an important story people suck. |

Because at first the prank was funny, and her death has changed it all those DJ's are not well know down under so sack the feckers Also it was pre-recorded so sack the CEO of the sation as well |
Anyone who works in the medical profession knows that you NEVER give out information on a patient over the phone.
So for that reason, the blame lies with the person who did just that. That person should have been dealt with in the same fashion as if it were a regular Joe Bloggs patient.. possibly a warning, and a suspension. The hospital staff are to blame for breaching basic confidentiality rules. I don't think the DJs have anything to answer for here to be honest. They played a prank. They didn't do it maliciously. They weren't trying to elicit information from the hospital, and they said beforehand that they didn't expect to get away with much more than a few sentences because of their dreadful accents. I'm no buying that this woman has taken her own life as a result of making a mistake at work. That would be a gross over-reaction. She has a husband and two children. There must have been more going on in her own life for her to reach this point. Unless of course, she was receiving abuse and/or threats from the public as a result of her error. In which case, that should be investigated. It's all quite tragic. A woman is dead, and her family deserve to know the reason why. |
Are the press now going to hound the DJ's until we have another tragedy on our hands? We don't need the irony.

No as they are in a Secret house and can Fade Away. |

The DJ's have given TV interviews which are due to be broadcast within the next half an hour.

As lily has said a woman is dead, a husband without a wife and 2 children are without a mother now, my thoughts and concerns are with them. |

The radio DJs behind a prank call to the hospital treating the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge have apologised after the nurse they duped apparently took her own life.
2Day FM presenters Mel Greig and Michael Christian were posing as the Queen and Prince Charles when they got Jacintha Saldanha to put them through to another nurse, who divulged details of Kate's treatment for severe morning sickness. In their first interview since the tragedy, Ms Greig said she wanted to say sorry to Ms Saldanha's husband and two children. "I've just thought about this a million times in my head that I've wanted to just reach out to them and just give them a big hug and say sorry," she said, wiping away tears. "I hope they're OK, I really do. I hope they get through this." Mr Christian said: "We just hope that they get all the love and support and care that they need." When asked how he felt he simply said: "Gutted, shattered, heartbroken." Ms Greig told of the moment she was told of Ms Saldanha's death, describing it as "the worst phone call I've ever had in my life". "I haven't stopped thinking about it since it happened. I remember my first question was 'was she a mother?'" The pair said the prank call idea came up in a team meeting, and that it was "collaborative" rather than a single individual's idea. The DJs are on indefinite leave and have been getting "intensive" counselling to deal with the death of Ms Saldanha ..my heart goes out to these djs...it all went so horribly wrong, but they couldn't have known that...I hope this puts an end to any negative media or public attention..and lets them start to heal themselves...a lot of people have suffered through this...and yes..they were part of it..but imo not a part which was intentionally malicious in anyway.... |
I feel really bad for the DJs, they wont be able to not think they are (partly) responsible for this :/
|
that's because they are, in life you have to take responsibility fir your own actions to grow as a person.
To hound a pregnant woman in hospital, that should never have even been suggested imo. |
I don't get why they keep using the "We tried 5 times to get through to the Hospital to get consent" argument to defend themselves. It's hard to believe they tried it 5 times yet still broadcast it anyway... And if they did it was pretty silly, for something like that they should've waited until they got consent.

tens of thousands of patients die every year from nursing negligence and abuse and barely a word is said....yet this one tragic story of 1 nurse gets thousandsof pages written about it. the whole disaster wasn just due to a tacky nasty prank but to the insatiable tacky greedy 24 hour news and tabloid trash that magnified the pressure and embarassment on this one pressurised person. very sad story, but blame should be shared beteen the pranksters and the media.

I agree that if blame needs to be put anywhere that the Press should bear the brunt of it.
|
To be honest I feel the attitude to these djs is very sad, there is culpability on so many levels:
1 - the hospital should have had trained staff manning the telephone, especially at the time they have the wife of the future heir to the throne as a patient 2 - as lily said earlier as sad as it is the nurse should not have given out confidential information, she should not have been allowed to cover the phones if she was unaware of the fundamental rules governing patient confidentiality 3 - the Australian radio station and it's legal team. In my mind the djs were pawns in this more than anything, thy will have been told to try the prank etc. the legal team then sanctioned the broadcast. 4 - the press who have since played and replayed and written about it. I could go on but to then persecute these two people only is ridiculous and smells of scapegoating as far as I am concerned. It's a terrible tragedy but as I said before hindsight is a wonderful thing, this cannot have be foreseen ending this badly. |

Arista, you make me laugh and frustrated in equal measure at different times. Let's just play out your scenario. Let's say we arrest them, fly them over here to face trial, and then lock them away for 10 years. Then what? What has that done, really? It doesn't achieve anything. |
