SNP hold Clydebank and Milngavie
The SNP's Marie McNair wins Clydebank and Milngavie, which was held by the party's Gil Paterson who held the seat for 10 years before retiring at the end of the last parliament.

Labour, who also came second in 2016, were up 10% but were still 5,000 behind the SNP.

Keep an eye on tactical voting

Nick Eardley

Political correspondent

Over the next few hours, as Scottish results drip in, keep an eye out for the battle between SNP turnout and pro-union tactical voting.

I’m told Labour are confident in Edinburgh Southern – and believe tactical voting for their candidate has gone up. Labour sources believe that’s happening in some other places where there is an obvious challenger to the SNP.

Contrast that with Edinburgh Central, one of the top target seats for the SNP. The Tories are admitting that it is looking difficult for them in Ruth Davidson’s old seat.

If the SNP win there, the path to an overall majority is a bit clearer. In places like Dumbarton and East Lothian – where Labour will rely on tactical voting to hold the seats – things are still up in the air. It’s early in the day – apply caution. But keep an eye on this.

The SNP will be worried'

Professor Sir John Curtice

Polling expert

The first three declarations in Scotland show a six point increase in turnout. Evidently, the constitutional debate has engaged voters in Scotland, despite a campaign that has been limited by the pandemic.

Meanwhile Clydebank and Milngavie is the first central belt constituency to declare, albeit a safe SNP one.

The SNP will be worried about the fact that Labour's vote is up by as much as 10 points while their own is down by two.

There is as much as a seven-point drop in the Conservative vote which may be a sign of tactical voting in favour of the second place Labour candidate.

If that's true, it just goes to show how spineless this country is, how indoctrinated we truly are.

Don't get on your knees when a group of political activists, who are smashing up the place, tell you too.

People don't want to see their leaders on their knees.

There's a lesson for him. He can have that one for free.
