I've read a few places saying that even of those not actively demonstrating, the "usual response" to Putin is conspicuous by its absence ... i.e. the usual clapping and cheering he gets from the Russian people is noticeably quieter and less enthusiastic, strongly suggesting that many of those who haven't spoken out, or aren't in a position to actively speak out, are not in support. I think it's probably the case that many of those who do overall support Putin's expressed goals (of keeping the buffer zone between NATO and Russia) or even the wider goals of reintegrating former Soviet Union states, are not fully in support of the military action that's been taken.

Imagine seeing what Johnson has done to rights, freedoms, living standards etc, and still calling any other politician scum.

That's like being obsessed with a young lady who married into a dysfunctional family, whilst the old man was selling titles to Saudi's and the uncle was paying off people that he'd never even met.

I saw on the news yesterday that Russian State TV have played down the invasion of Ukraine - many Russians have not seen the extent of the firepower they have brought against their neighbours. I don't know how restricted the Russian population is with regards to external news sources but the footage the Russians had been shown on their TV news was very different to what we are seeing.

Expecting a nation of tribal peoples to have the organisation and military capabilities of a modern western country is a consequence of differing realities. Ask the Russians how Afghanis can defend their country.

The Russian army should take over.
They can easily overpower Putin.
It's been done many times in other countries, so it could work.

Alf 25-02-2022 11:09 AM

UK unleashes its secret weapon.

Imagine what she'd have done if Putin had have invaded Iceland?

They're bombing areas where people live. This is starting to look like déjà vu. History repeating itself.
Putin has to be stopped, before he becomes another Hitler

Its the only way to get rid of him.
He has to go, I don't think he'll stop at Ukraine.

At least Russia isn't like China though ("The Great Firewall" etc. - China is basically walled off from much of the "real" internet and VPN use is risky) - they do have relatively open internet access and an internet-savvy population who will know how to circumvent any blocking that is in place with VPN's... so, they will definitely be seeing unrestricted footage out of Ukraine via social media and non-Russian media sources.

He may stop at Ukraine

If he attacks a Nato backed nation
it is not as easy.

The Slim Reaper 25-02-2022 11:21 AM

If folks in the UK ever decided to protest against their government the way the Russians are currently, priti patel will soon be able to lock them up for 10 years.

A lot of rightful criticism of Putins regime, but these are the kinds of things we've not only allowed in the UK, but actively cheered on.

On balance I honestly think it's highly unlikely that he'll invade a NATO member nation. Again as I said earlier... despite the narrative, Putin is not insane. Power hungry certainly but he's not some wildcard lunatic, he knows exactly what he's doing and where he can risk pushing. Ukraine was vulnerable because they had no official defensive pacts to protect against this aggression. It's happening NOW because they were trying to make those pacts and gain that protection, thus Putin has taken devastating action "before it was too late". It wouldn't have happened if they were already NATO.

It's one of the things that almost makes me go "full-Alf". Putin is using legislation that was put in place for COVID... and that's exactly the sort of legal technicalities the UK govt. will be able to use now that they couldn't have in 2019. The government has gained permanent increases in power to restrict and restrain the population from COVID law changes.

Never go full Alf :smug:

Even more worrying, is that these UK bills aren't anything to do with covid, they're just doing them because they have the majority to ram them through. Ask pretty much anyone in the UK prior to the Ukraine invasion, and they would have all said Putin was a dictator ruling by fear etc, but exactly the same types of policies are being introduced here under cheers and flag waving. Europe is in for another dark couple of decades.
