Why is it called Slow Horses when it’s about the CIA ?

Very off putting

I thought about watching that new Sheridan Smith drama 'castaways', despite the bad reviews . I think they were inspired by Tom Hanks movie.

Really , really enjoying Yellowstone ..

Gets better and better .. the storylines are a little far fetched but it’s good escapism which is where I am right now

I've done a fair bit of TV viewing lately.

I've put Blue Eye Samurai on hold for now.

I've finished Silo yesterday, and tbh overall I would say it has been the best Sci-Fi effort that I've seen in years, Severance was baby steps in comparison.

Don't get me wrong Silo isn't perfect (the show can be very dry on dark humour) and some of the characters could do with a bit more character development (some of the characters though are really well written) so it's a bit of a mixed bag in that area imo.

The area where Silo is really refreshing, is how strong the plot is, and how detailed the plot is, because I'm so used to TV Shows nowadays in general either doing shallow plotting, no plotting or trying to rip off TLOU really badly plotting with the adoptive parent to child trope. Where as Silo will develop how the society in the Silo works, and throughout the season you will keep finding out new information about the secrets within the Silo. And the last scene in the finale made me want to see more of how the story goes, a plot in a TV Show hasn't made me feel like that in an American Show since GOT.

The Sci-Fi genre full stop wants to look at Silo's worldbuilding and general plot direction if they want to get back to their glory days again, because even if you go back to more lighthearted Sci-Fi Shows like Farscape or Stargate SG-1, they build more of an interesting and detailed societies than you'll get in say The Mandalorian or Lost In Space.

Onimusha - This was very disappointing imo, I watched 4 episodes of it before calling it quits, because it is so painfully by the numbers that there's nothing to really hook me into the Anime personally.

Onimusha tbf does some things well like the aesthetic of the world, having an older protagonist in an industry that likes either Loli girls or teen boys to take the lead normally, it has interesting Music, and it clearly wants to be Dororo which is good. It even isn't afraid to kill characters off.

Where it lets itself down for me is the plot and character development, I honestly don't know what is wrong with modern writers or modern audience taste, but there are so many Japanese Anime and Live Action Shows that just don't bother to develop a story, or give their main cast actual personalities that are interesting or well developed.

And unfortunately Onimusha is very guilty of both, the "story" is practically non-existent, and the characters have about as much character development as Plank did on Ed, Edd n Eddy, and both of these issues are happening far too often nowadays. It makes me wonder what the **** is going on behind the scenes.

And I've watched the first 4 episodes of Back Street Girls: Gokudolls - Now this might not appeal to everyone because I did read a review on MAL accusing it of being Transphobic (basically code for it does Comedy) but I'm going to guess that some people will share that opinion for some reason.

And tbf if you're not even remotely up on the Japanese Idol scene or the Yakuza, then the humour will fall flat for you more than likely.

Imo though the Anime is hilarious so far, if you can embrace what it's going for anyway.

Basically the concept of the Show is a Yakuza boss gives three of his Yakuza members an ultimatum to make up for failing him.

1. Have their organs harvested and sold.

Or

2. Go to Thailand and have sex reassignment surgery to become Pop Idols, and basically it goes from there.

It essentially is a Parody of the Idol scene, and they use Yakuza members to do it just for extra comedic effect.

they have just fed you back apple tv shows which is quite funny. There are some good shows on apple tv that i do like, but whats more important, and this applies to the excellent Slow horses, is that the acting is superbly done and the writing/stories are top notch.

Fair points.

I personally can overlook the acting if the story and characters are good, but I suppose it does depend on how bad the acting is.

…I’ve just started to watch Boy Swallows Universe on Netflix…I think I’m only onto episode 3 or 4 atm but its a good watch so far…Simon Baker from The Mentalist is almost unrecognisable in it but he’s the only one of the cast that I’m familiar with from any previous roles…

Zizu 12-01-2024 08:35 AM

I’m well into Series 5 of Yellowstone and I love every second of it .

I've nearly finished Season 1 of Hannibal.

I really enjoyed The Silence Of The Lambs and Manhunter, so Hannibal had some tough shoes to fill, but tbf I think that the Season has been a very solid first Season.

Yeah there could be minor improvements, but nothing show destroying imo.

And Hugh Dancy, Mads Mikkelsen & Laurence Fishburne have all been delivering solid performances on the Show so far.

Aside from the obvious inspiration of Silence Of The Lambs, the Show also reminds me of aspects from Dexter and Criminal Minds, and I enjoyed both of those Shows a lot (I even liked some of their later Seasons) so I am really happy to see Hannibal being more like them, rather than being some timid thing that's afraid of it's own shadow.

Oh and I finished Back Street Girls: Gokudols and it was hilarious imo.

Nicky91 15-01-2024 01:39 PM

watched episode 5 of Siren Season 3 last night

Spoiler:

birth of Ryn's baby scene, unfortunately Meredith didn't survive that pregnancy and Meredith despite being a human/mermaid hybrid got a burial at sea by Ryn and Cami for her efforts of delivering that baby

meanwhile Helen and Xander had to get rid of Bryan's corpse at the ranch, Bryan's funeral in the yard when the group lit him up in flames, all the while inside the pregnancy was taking place :joker:

Xander his police training, had to go back to the water, when Calvin messed up with his mermaid tour boat, not having done proper maintenance to save money so they ended up stuck in the middle of the waters with one passenger having bumped her head and was bleeding, Xander telling Calvin to man up for once :amazed: :clap2:

as for our villain, Tia she's gathering her forces underwater for the war with some of Ryn's tribe spying on her from a safe distance

don't get why there isn't a season 4 tbh, such an amazing series, those visuals are divine, also
Spoiler:

with the mermaid baby, nice transformation from human form to mermaid form

…I’ve just started to watch another Harlan Coben series, Safe…I’ve only watched two episodes so far but the plot is building quite intriguingly….

Just started Boy Swallows Universe on Netflix, I'm really enjoying it, the little boy who plays the main character is such a good actor and a likable guy. Also, Ragner Lothbrok and Patrick Jane are in it.............both looking very different but being their Australian selves. Ammi i think you'd like this show a lot

Niamh. 16-01-2024 09:19 AM

Ohhh nevermind, I should have read back a few posts eh? haha but I knew you'd like it :p

…yeah, I actually didn’t realise that Simon Baker was Australian and always just assumed him to be American…I loved him in this, the whole cast were pretty perfect and a really likeable and endearing dysfunctional family that somehow functioned beautifully….I’ve been recommending this series to everyone who’ll listen……the actor who played Eli is adorable….

I knew he was Australian because he was in Home and Away back in the 90's

…oh, I completely missed his character in that…although I did tend to just watch it on and off so missed a lot of the storylines…he’s fairly unrecognisable in this…I don’t know if his character has come into it yet for you…but he’s someone that is easy to warm to more and more…

Yes he is in it, I think we watched 3 and half episodes last night. I actually didn't recognise him at first he looks so different

Spoiler:

…so you’re past the bit when they cut Eli’s finger off…I almost didn’t continue watching it when that happened just because of the violent bits involving a child as well and it’s so upsetting to see that, when it’s children …but I’d already attached to the characters so I thought I’d give it one more episode and I’m so glad I did…and I don’t want to say anything that’ll give any storylines away but everything has a reason for being the way it is and it pulls together perfectly…

ahh good glad to hear that, I'm not far past the bit where

Spoiler:

Gus tells Eli that they died before and that he's the one on the phone trying to fix things. I guess that's what Elis dream is about, maybe they died in a car crash and them floating in space and seeing things like his mother in a cage etc is all different options of what can happen in their lives. No spoilers though :p

Ammi 16-01-2024 02:25 PM

Spoiler:

…yeah, it’s very layered and quite clever …I won’t say anything else until you’ve watched it and it’s a quick watch because it’s hard to put down and not have that one more episode before I sleep, thing…
…I also enjoyed Bryan Brown’s character a lot, he’s always a great watch and isn’t really featured in very much I’ve seen…I thought the whole thing was so well cast…
