You didn't watch it live at the time though.

This series was more about humour, it didn't need the huge arguments that they relied on later.

So what?

BB5 was a much more humorous series.

Well back in 2001 this whole format of TV was very new and popular as a result. Fast forward 19 years and we've seen it all. It's nostalgic for sure and great to Davina in the BB setting again on C4 and I am convinced they didn't really have much of a choice in the episodes they chose.

I just wish Rylan didn't keep stealing Davina's spotlight. Would've made more sense to have Davina and Emma or Davina and Dermot.

Rylan comes out for a potato planting

If I watched live feed for this series I'd have the camera on the chickens than the actual housemates

Samm 25-06-2020 08:49 PM

Yeah both 5 and 6. Even especially 5 was a lot more funnier. The box task for one yesterday didn’t have any big arguments and relied solely on humour

I think it's entirely possible to acknowledge that something that was good and enjoyable at the time doesn't age all that well and ends up being kind of mediocre in hindsight. That's basically what happened with the second Survivor season for me. It was huge at the time and holds a place in my heart but then on retrospect it's probably one of the weakest early seasons. And that seems to be kinda true with BB2 too honestly.

Braden 25-06-2020 08:54 PM

I'm actually quite enjoying this episode. It's nice to see people just act like normal human beings and get on for the most part. Quite sweet, really.

James 25-06-2020 08:54 PM

Another thing was they didn't have the same level of manipulation as in later series.

Although, to be honest, the housemates were more wise to Big Brother so they producers do need to help things along a bit, to bring out reactions.

James 25-06-2020 08:58 PM

BB4 was the boring one. It was quite different to BB2.

However 4 was still watchable enough at the time.

Yep, really bad series.

Macie Lightfoot 25-06-2020 09:01 PM

I don't really know what humor was in BB2 though  If I wanted to watch something humorous I'd go with a Federico or Lisa Jeynes highlight reel before I touch anything BB2 related.

James 25-06-2020 09:03 PM

Brian was really funny. So was Helen in a different way.

Strictly Jake 25-06-2020 09:42 PM

No sorry I found that boring

I understand at the time it was a completely new concept it was all about an experiment and the chickens are cute. It was all simple and just a fly on the wall tv programme. It would have worked for the time and I bet it was more enjoyable back then

But we have hindsight and we knew how entertaining series 5 to 9 were and they are so rewatchable. I wouldnt wanna watch these older series they just seem boring. I was young so never watched it at the time but I do remember it was a big deal and it was in the papers a lot so I get the nostalgia aspect to it

It was a bit of an underwhelming specials series I think I only enjoyed the bb6/bb7 episodes

But again that could be to do with them being the series that I watched in full when they were on live so to me they are nostalgic too(but dont feel that long ago at all)

I can see big brother coming back with Davina but I am so scared it would flop badly

James 26-06-2020 01:17 AM

Another thing about BB2 was many at the time found the Helen and Paul relationship compelling.

Something like that had never been seen on television before. A real relationship, not scripted, developing on-screen.

Macie Lightfoot 26-06-2020 01:20 AM

I personally think it’s kinda creepy that the relationship was glorified since Helen had Big G on the outside but hey, I guess 2001 was a different time

James 26-06-2020 01:28 AM

Yeah, I remember Simon Pegg going on BBLB at the time, and pointing that out.

Captain.Remy 26-06-2020 07:24 AM

The early seasons have to be watched while thinking about the context, I believe.
Many things happened that could occur today as "boring" or whatever, but at the time it was all fresh, new and polarizing. I think it's fascinating tbh

BB glorified Chantelle and Preston too. Even invited Preston's girlfriend to the final to watch the Prestelle best bits.

And Stephanie Davis dumped her boyfriend during CBB in 2016 to get off with Jeremy McConnell.

So they didnt show BB5 because Jason is a murderer?

1. We don't know it's the same guy
2. The trial hasn't begun yet.

Tony Montana 26-06-2020 01:48 PM

Last night was the deadest episode ever. Way to end the show with a terrible episode.

I've @ C4, BB and Davina a few times on twitter and instagram asking what happened to season 5 and I've had no response.

I'm currently re-watching BB5 and just finished the morning after the night before (fight night) and the entertainment value still holds up. This was also the first full season of BB that I watched live and I was hooked.

I find it amazing that series' of the show aren't available in their entirety from the network. With every network running a streaming service now it seems more doable than ever... however with what's happening in the world now I would see why they'd err on the side of caution making some of this content available because it could potentially offend some overly super PC viewers.
