Modern pentathlon?

These are the four main stages of a quadrathlon, with Kayaking filling the game between Swimming and Cycling. Running is what I was looking for, but the run would be cross-country, so that'll do for 5 points. Funnily enough, some quadrathlons actually end with the competitor having to slice a melon in half with a sword in order to stop the timer, but I feared that would be to obscure.

I'll be honest, I'm not surprised nobody got this one, it was a cruel revenge sequence on my part :P

The trick here is knowing that A,B,C etc. is not representing a sequence, they are the actual names of the items being discussed. The next clue I was looking for was C++ (Or C# would have been acceptable)

C is the most widely used programming language in the world, it was preceeded by B (which was preceded by A, which was never made public). These were later followed by D, but D was not what directly followed C, it was infact, C++. So, no points there (I can only apologise)
